About us

Percept is a transdisciplinary advisory firm, harnessing rigour and ingenuity for a healthier, more equitable, and more resilient world. We are rooted in South Africa, but collaborate with a translocal network of clients and partners to tackle the knotty strategic, policy and technical problems that arise out of complex systems. Our dynamic team transgresses knowledge silos, drawing on theory and methods from actuarial science, history, anthropology, clinical medicine, sociology, and public health (amongst others).

Percept will be intentionally sunsetting on 30 September 2024, after seven years of operation. This announcement comes with heavy hearts, but also extraordinary pride in our journey, and deep gratitude to those who’ve walked it with us. Through our people, our relationships, and the repertoire of work we’ve seeded, Percept will continue to live on as an ancestor, informing new pathways to a healthier, more equitable, and more resilient world. “Everything dies, but that’s kind of good. It makes for a very rich world. All the richness, all that fecundity, all that beautiful miracle of life; it happens because we live in cycles, not perpetuity.” – Adrienne Maree Brown

"Stories at sunset" is a series of conversations with Percept’s people, recorded during the period of the organisation’s intentional sunset. A sunset is an in-between state, at the edges of day and night, before a new dawn. It offers us an opportunity to appreciate, and reflect on, the wisdom of the ‘in-between’, which has always been at the heart of Percept’s work: what might we discover in the wild, unbounded territories between disciplines, between ecology and economy, between social dis-ease and biological disease, between industry silos? What new futures might emerge from the cracks of these in-between spaces? How might the end of this cycle provide nourishment for the next? "There is nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns." – Octavia E. Butler In this short 6-minute episode, we're in conversation with Ursula Torr, discussing the translation of technical knowledge into practical solutions that actually work, the discoveries through Ursula's Percept journey, and the data lessons taken forward from Percept. If you’d like to join the conversation, you can do so by reaching out to Ursula to learn more about her work. The Primary Healthcare Innovation (PRIMI) project was an initiative of the Western Cape Government: Health and Wellness (WCGHW). The project sought to leverage data and innovative service design to enhance the quality and sustainability of community oriented primary healthcare (COPC) services in the Western Cape province. Percept was tasked with supporting the Department in analysing and refining existing COPC tools and activities and redesigning an efficient COPC service delivery model. The journey of PRIMI, represented as a River of Life, reflects the life course of the project, which took many twists and turns, and delivered lasting impact through the various sub-projects. #primaryhealthcare #healthcare #innovation #PRIMI
