Experienced Leader | Change and Communication Management Consultant | Sasol Solar Challenge Director

Have we witnessed a giant leap forward in solar car technology? The 2024 Sasol Solar Challenge delivered something truly extraordinary – the Innoptus Solar Team not only set but then surpassed their own daily distance record, ultimately reaching a remarkable 703 km. What makes this achievement even more impressive is the context in which it occurred. Covering such a distance on public roads, within the demanding format of the Sasol Solar Challenge, is no small feat. The format involves navigating through varying speed limits, traffic, mandatory driver changes, and scheduled control stops – but that’s just part of the challenge. Teams must also contend with uneven terrain, unpredictable weather, and road gradients, all of which create less-than-ideal conditions for solar car performance. With mandatory driver changes every two hours, 30-minute control stops, and navigating through towns, traffic, and varied speed limits, achieving over 700 km becomes an almost unimaginable challenge. Yet, they made it happen. While covering 700 km in ideal conditions—on a straight road with minimal stops and no traffic— is certainly achievable, doing so in the format of the #SasolSolarChallenge is another story entirely. This is more than just a testament to the skill of the team; it's a reflection of how far solar car technology has come in a short span of time. Just two years ago, we (I) believed that 600 or maybe 650 km was the limit in these conditions. But now, we've seen those boundaries pushed significantly, and the question we have to ask is: Have we now reached a pivotal moment in solar car technology? Or was this achievement the perfect mix of favourable conditions, radiation levels, and a team operating at its peak? In my opinion, what we are seeing is the culmination of years of development coming to fruition. These massive distances are becoming possible thanks to continual technological advancements, and it opens up a whole new realm of possibilities for solar-powered transport and future mobility. With rapid progress, could we see even bigger records in two years' time? Or will this record stand for a while as a testament to the incredible work behind it? It’s an exciting time to be involved in solar innovation and future mobility. Let me know your thoughts in the comments – do you think this is the beginning of an even greater leap forward? #SolarInnovation #FutureMobility #SasolSolarChallenge #SolarCars #SustainableTechnology
