President & CEO @ Sasol | Management Programme, INSEAD

Yesterday, I had the honour of hosting President Cyril Ramaphosa together with the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Minister Gwede Mantashe at our Secunda Operations. They were joined by Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu and Govan Mbeki Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr Nhlakanipho. Together with members of my management and operations team, we took the President on a tour of our flagship synthetic fuels and chemicals site in South Africa. Our Secunda Operations site is a critical asset to South Africa’s energy landscape and key enabler of wider industrial activity. We supply between 8 to 10 billion litres or 40% of South Africa’s fuel needs and we are the only local producer of jet fuel with a direct pipeline to OR Tambo International Airport. Through our chemicals value chain, we help farmers nurture their crops through nitrogen-fertilisers, while our polypropylene is woven into carpets and keeps food and consumer goods fresh. We supply gas to about 300 customers with over 400 supply points across four provinces. Our business activities enable us to be a significant social impact investor, with over R1,2 billion invested in skills development and R795 million in social development. We also showed our world-leading Fischer-Tropsch (FT) technology that is at the centre of our Secunda Operations and will leverage this capability for future sustainable energy. We have deep expertise in operating mega-scale complex facilities. For example, our Secunda Operations spans 15km2 and self-generates between 600 and 800MW of electricity. To ensure a sustainable energy future for all South Africans will mean industry and government need to be aligned on the pace and mechanics of the energy transition. We are committed to supporting government in ensuring that the next phase of Sasol’s growth aligns with South Africa’s broader development goals. Our focus is on sustainably advancing industrialisation and prosperity.

October is globally recognized as "Mental Health Awareness Month", focusing on reducing the stigma surrounding mental illness and encouraging open discussions about mental well-being. This year's theme at Sasol, "It is Time to Prioritise Mental Health in the Workplace", calls on all employees to create a supportive environment that values mental health and aims to highlight the importance of mental well-being in professional environments. It is to bring forward a unified voice, emphasising how workplace experiences can be transformed by prioritising mental health. Workplace mental health initiatives can dramatically improve the quality of professional experiences, reducing stress and enhancing productivity. Simple gestures like sharing a "smile😁" or offering a "fist bump👊" to a colleague can make a huge difference. Studies show that a smile can boost mood, relieve stress, and even improve relationships. A friendly gesture might just lighten a colleague’s day, offering emotional support without the need for words. By acknowledging Mental Health Awareness Month, you can foster a more inclusive and compassionate workplace. Take part in this global initiative by sharing your stories and strategies to improve mental health at work. Remember, World Mental Health Day, on October 10 is an opportunity to further raise awareness and promote well-being in our professional and personal lives. Let’s continue working toward a mentally healthier work environment! #WMHD #WEARESASOL #MYSMILE4YOU 😃 #MYFISTBUMP4YOU 👊 ..... 🤓
