  • Sustainability is becoming an essential part of business compliance, particularly for suppliers in key source markets. New EU regulations, such as the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, will require international tour operators to conduct human rights and environmental due diligence throughout their supply chains. This is both a challenge and an opportunity for South African tourism businesses. A recent impact assessment led by German and Austrian tour operators, in collaboration with the Roundtable Human Rights in Tourism and Fair Trade Tourism (FTT), examined South African tourism suppliers across Cape Town, Johannesburg, and the Greater Kruger National Park. The key takeaway? Fair wages, workers’ safety, and community inclusion are top priorities, and transparency on these issues will directly impact market access. Rachel Nxele, Communications and Engagement Coordinator at FTT and SATSA Vice-Chair, highlights the shift in global procurement strategies: “Hotels, lodges, and tour operators that can demonstrate reduced risk to overseas buyers in areas such as labour rights, environmental impact, and community engagement will be able to position themselves as preferential suppliers. Businesses that fail to do so risk exclusion from European supply chains as responsible tourism commitments become standard procurement criteria.” This is where SATSA and FTT’s new partnership plays a vital role. Through structured support, resources, and certification, SATSA members will be better equipped to meet rising global sustainability standards while simultaneously improving local economic impact. If your business relies on international markets, now is the time to prepare. Compliance isn’t just about risk mitigation – it’s about gaining a competitive edge in an ever-changing global industry. Join the conversation at WTM Africa (9-10 April) for crucial discussions on responsible tourism, sustainability, and EU compliance. SATSA and FTT will also host an exclusive session on how our partnership is empowering members to thrive sustainably. #SATSA #TourismSA #TourismIndustrySA #VoiceOfInboundTourism #ResponsibleTourism #SustainableTravel #FairTradeTourism

  • As global travel rebounds, Africa faces a pivotal question: Should we scale up for mass tourism or double down on niche markets that offer high-value, low-impact growth? SATSA CEO David Frost will tackle this debate at WTM Africa in the speaker session ‘African Tourism: Go Big or Stay Niche?’ at 10:00 on 9 April. Alongside Kgomotso Ramothea (Chief Executive Officer for ATTA®), karoline Hood (CEO & Founder of King Salama Safaris - Safaris to Kenya), and Karl Parkinson (Africa Bush Camps’ Partnerships Manager), David will explore whether the continent should embrace volume-driven strategies or curate more exclusive, experience-led tourism. Here’s why this conversation matters now more than ever: 1. The case for going big Africa’s vast landscapes and cultures make it an ideal contender for large-scale tourism – but can infrastructure keep up? Destinations like Kenya and Egypt have long thrived on high visitor numbers, but managing sustainability alongside growth remains a challenge. 2. The power of niche markets Niche tourism attracts travellers willing to pay a premium for exclusivity and authenticity. Countries like Rwanda have successfully positioned themselves in this space – should others follow suit? 3. Finding the sweet spot Is there a middle ground where destinations attract meaningful volumes without compromising on quality or sustainability? And how can emerging markets across Africa carve out unique value propositions in an increasingly competitive global landscape? Moderated by Jillian Blackbeard, CEO of Africa's Eden Tourism Association, this session promises thought-provoking insights into the future of African tourism strategy – and you won’t want to miss it! #WTMAfrica #SATSA #TourismSA #TourismIndustrySA #VoiceOfInboundTourism

  • The delay of South Africa’s 2025 budget speech due to disagreements over a proposed VAT increase from 15% to 17% raises big questions for the tourism sector. If implemented, how will this affect inbound travel and local businesses? 1. Will higher costs deter travellers? Even a small tax hike can impact price-sensitive travellers, particularly those from other African markets where exchange rates already influence affordability. Accommodation, dining, transport, and tours could all become more expensive, potentially pushing regional visitors towards alternative destinations like Kenya or Namibia. 2. Pressure on local travel businesses For hotels, tour operators, and restaurants (especially SMEs), the dilemma is clear: absorb higher costs or pass them on to consumers? Larger players may have room to adjust pricing strategies, but smaller operators could struggle to stay competitive while maintaining profitability. 3. Business & event travel at risk? With South Africa hosting major conferences like Africa's Travel Indaba, rising costs may prompt corporate travellers and event organisers to rethink their destination choices, impacting an important segment of the industry’s recovery post-COVID. With uncertainty ahead, proactive planning is key for tourism stakeholders. How do you see this potential VAT hike affecting your business or travel decisions? #SATSA #TourismSA #TourismIndustrySA #VoiceOfInboundTourism #BudgetSpeech2025
