Did you know? Around 100 veterinarians leave South Africa each year to work abroad, while only about 140 new vets qualify annually, according to the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development. Dr Paul van der Merwe, president of the South African Veterinary Association, highlights that this shortage hits rural areas hardest. There, the lack of vets is often compounded by limited equipment and medication, as well as clinic closures.
