SSB efficiently keeps sharks separated from swimmers and surfers, whilst safeguarding marine ecosystems.
About us
SharkSafe Barrier Pty Ltd is the only scientifically tested, eco-friendly shark-specific, robust barrier that protects surfers and swimmers, as well as large sharks, whilst safeguarding and contributing to the integrity of marine biodiversity. The SharkSafe Barrier merges the biomimicry of a thick kelp forest, known to be a natural barrier to some shark species, with large permanent magnets (which overwhelmed sharks' electromagnetic receptors) to create a shark-deterrent magnetic field. The SSB works 24/7 and is 20 times cheaper to maintain than shark exclusion nets. This novel technology solves international problems associated with shark attacks including loss of lives, loss of income for local businesses, and loss of biodiversity in marine ecosystems associated with current shark culling programs. It thus contributes to the preservation of a healthy ocean ecosystem, while also promoting the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth.

In light of Shark Awareness Day 2024, I wanted to share this exciting and innovate shark repellent technology that reduces the need for shark nets on Australian beaches. In the 2022-23 meshing season in NSW (Sep-Apr) approximately 90% of the species caught were non-target species (Whites and Tiger sharks). This 90% included many species of threatened and protected sharks, rays, turtles, dolphins, seals and finfish. The 2022 review of the program stated that these nets do NOT eliminate the risk for surfers from target sharks, and the ratio of bycatch to target sharks was 10:1. The “SharkSafe Barrier” is a shark repellent device that resembles the structure of kelp with a magnetic field to deter shark species and allow other animals to pass through unharmed. This method not only stops the culling of sharks and bycatch, but also acts as an artificial sanctuary for marine life. After years of rigorous testing around the world, the Sharksafe Barrier has proved to be 100% effective in deterring target shark species even with a food source placed behind the barrier. Proving that this would be a perfect replacement to the current meshing program. SharkSafe Barrier (Pty) Ltd #sharksafebarrier #netsoutnow #nswsharksmart #sharknets #sharkconservation #sharkweek2024
Research and Development has been an essential component of the SharkSafe Barrier technology, as it allows us to continue to innovate and improve the barrier, reduce costs, and provide scientific evidence of its effectiveness. Transparent communication of research findings helps foster trust and support, which is vital to us. SharkSafe Barrier (Pty) Ltd most recent research and development involved a deployment in Granger Bay, Cape Town. The primary objective is to assess the resilience and effectiveness of the prototype fence grid installed on a rocky seafloor exposed to high-energy waves. Next time you pass through Granger Bay, look out for our research and development, just opposite the CTUT parking lot.
