Growing up watching her mother and grandmother knit and crotchet was what first piqued interest in the craft for Social Employment Fund (SEF) eyecare ambassador, Lutho Sofute. As time passed, she ended up enjoying her new found hobby, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Her ability to knit helped her explore the prospects of starting a business and generating income through her craft. Her curiosity birthed her business, Fudumala Project. Lutho believes that, given her knowledge and skillset, knitting and crocheting could also be an excellent place to start her own community initiative. This project would primarily focus on teaching and demonstrating knitting and crocheting to unemployed youth so they can gain new skills to start their own ventures. The end products from these sessions would then be donated to smaller charitable organisations. To make her cause a reality, Lutho is extending an invitation to those with the heart to contribute towards equipping unemployed youth by donating wool for her knitting and crocheting classes. “I recently knitted a jacket to showcase my skills to my fellow colleagues and prove that I have the skills to transfer to others. It usually takes about two weeks to finish a product depending on the product needed and available material. I am requesting wool donations for my crocheting and knitting project,” she said. This #FlashbackFriday, we reflect on our recent Women’s Day event where we had the wonderful opportunity of hosting an empowering session for about 40 women from our beneficiaries who were nominated based on their stellar leadership and entrepreneurship potential. This was a moment to encourage, share love, camaraderie, business, and success tips. Charting in the set footsteps of this year’s theme of “Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy towards Women’s Development,” the event had the motivational Taryn Woodbridge: Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director for Finance and Controlling at Mercedes-Benz South Africa as the keynote speaker. Taryn delved into her insightful journey of resilience and persistence to reach her dream goal which left many in attendance awestruck and inspired. Chiming in with an informative talk on services that can be accessed, Zukiswa Mselana, information officer at Small Enterprise Development Agency_gov (SEDA) inspired attendees on how to tap into the support to make that idea a reality. To motivate and challenge attendees, Anezwa Mvakade, a local young entrepreneur shared insights and lessons she has learnt on her journey. Our Small Enterprise Development Programme coordinator, Sisipho Namntu also chimed in on the support we provide to budding entrepreneurs such as training, mentorship, and micro-loans, while dynamic LinkFM presenter and MC, Bantu Bungane sealed the day with inspiring words to our women; encouraging them and emphasising their importance and role in people’s lives. This truly was an opportunity to reboot, reflect, and refocus on achieving the dreams that may have lay dormant within these powerful women. It ignited a renewed zeal to do more. Attendee, Ayabonga Jezile, reflected on the experience and said, “Thank you for inviting me to such an informative event, I am so grateful I attended such an inspiring event, full of wisdom.
