PLAUSIBLE RISKS MULDERSDRIFT 2024 - THE YEAR TO COME 2023 came and went in a flash. The year was not without its challenges and achievements. On the positive side we added another two thermal monoculars to our fleet; every night five of our reaction officers can now see deep into the dark. Our growing CCTV service, Overwatch expanded to cover 2,2 km of territory in the region. Dozens of community members, patrollers, and venue staff attended our free security training sessions. We also handed over various criminal suspects to Muldersdrift SAPS for cases as diverse as house robbery, business burglary, and theft of infrastructure. Muldersdrift SAPS also had a new positive change in leadership. We wish our new Station Commander the best in her new role. On the negative side, crime continued consistently. Continuous infrastructure crime has depleted our power grid. Our rivers, which supply a lifeline to tourism venues, were severely polluted, and empty buildings were stripped and used by a growing Zama-Zama network. To better understand the year to come, we present an adapted representation of Sohail Inayatullah’s Futures Triangle Model. This model reviews the weight of the past, the push of the present and the pull of the future. From this triangle we have projected five plausible threats that our precinct may well face in the year to come. Can something be done about this? Yes, but not if the weight of these threats is left to individuals. The greatest power is in community. Increase collective vigilance. This can be done with roadside CCTV schemes, well-managed WhatsApp groups, community training (including staff members), and radio networks. The best force multiplier is through collective action. Join neighbourhood watches and community patrol schemes. Create street-level stokvels to invest in security technology and infrastructure. We are aware of at least three active streets in the Muldersdrift region that are already doing this. Practice the Japanese principle of Kaizen, meaning continuous improvement. Large security upgrades are expensive, but small continuous improvements add up to a large impact. With a new year ahead of us, SMS would like to thank the patrollers, exceptional community members, paramedics, police officers, and other security providers who stood with us during the trials of 2023. To our loyal clients, we appreciate your support over the last year. Wishing you a safe new year.    #2024trends #future #muldersdrift #smssecurity #plausibefutures #newyear2024

2023 has seen an increase in illegal mining activities in the Muldersdrift precinct. Police and security companies have conducted various takedown operations, but it’s clear the problem is not going to go away. One of the key lessons for all residents, is to monitor abandoned an unused building structures on plots . Residents can make a difference being vigilant and looking out for signs that illegal mining activities are taking place. If you spot any of the below, do not put it on a WhatsApp group. Rather notify your security company who will engage with police. - [ ] Machinery that continually makes grinding and crushing sounds. - [ ] Groups of unknown men continuously entering and leaving and area. - [ ] Cable, borehole and tool thefts in the region. - [ ] Strange vehicles arriving and leaving at night. - [ ] Unusual illegal electricity and water connections. The following article will give you some perspective of the scale of illegal mining in South Africa. #illegalmining #communityawareness #smssecurity #muldersdrift https://lnkd.in/dAGQ5bKQ

On the dark farms and plots of South Africa, its common for plot owners to use staff to assist with security duties. But are these staff members properly equipped for these duties? This one-hour presentation will assist staff members to identify danger, take action and keep properties well maintained and secure. This presentation is a free service to the Muldersdrift community. #smssecurity #security #farmsafety #stafftraining

Gate motor thefts are on the increase! Traditional gate motor brackets are not doing the job. Crime footage shows us that criminals easily bypass these brackets by destroying them with a crowbar. A solid gate motor cage ticks two of the D's of physical security: DEFEND and DETER. You can add one more tick, DETECT by adding a tamper switch linked to your alarm system or by using live CCTV monitoring of the gate area. See our gate motor cage Black November Specials below. #physicalsecurity #gatemotor #smssecurity #blacknovember #crimeprevention

Dog poisoning is a sinister and cruel crime that leads to the dog dying a terrible death. While it’s a crime that carries a small punishment, the trauma and pain that dog poisoning causes is immense. Protect your dogs by following these tips: Lookout for suspicious activity on the borders of your property. Walk your property once a day and lookout for food that has been thrown into the property. Check your dogs regularly and lookout for the symptoms listed below. If possible, its better to keep your dogs inside at night. #smssecurity #muldersdrift #crimeprevention #dogpoisoning #animalcruelty

With hijacking rates increasing, here are a few practical steps to make your day a little safer:   1.  Beware of highway offramps. offramps in our operational area have become hijacking hotspots. As you arrive at the offramp, slowdown and look around. Try to make visual contact with people standing on the periphery of the offramp.   2.  Give yourself some space. As you approach stationary traffic make sure you can at least see the tyres of the car in front of you. If you can’t you are too close!   3.  Stay off your phone, stay off your phone, stay off your phone. Cell phones drastically reduce situational awareness and convert a capable motorist into an easy target. #crimeprevention #hijackprevention #safetytips #SMSsecurity https://lnkd.in/diQ2Awqf

Are torches and spotlights a thing of the past in the world of security? In many instances, the answer is YES. When operating with a torch you are severely limited by the amount of illumination that the torch provides. Torch's also expose your position by telling the bad guys where you are. With the advent of thermal technology and AI-based CCTV systems, it is possible to see far into the dark without giving away your location. Thermal scopes have become so successful that we have invested in five scopes for our operation. What does this mean? Our officers can actually see in the dark. With the end-of-year crime season now in full swing, contact SMS Security Group and order a thermal scan solution for your property. #technology #thermalimaging #smssecurity #securitytips #muldersdrift
