Talborne’s premium Vita Rock-Phos (Soft Rock Phosphate) is an effective way to correct soils deficient in phosphorus. It is naturally mined and untreated and is an approved input for Organic Farming and Growing. Available in granule or powder format. Phosphorus (P) is a major plant nutrient found in every living plant cell. It is essential for healthy plant growth as it is responsible for key plant functions, such as energy transfer, photosynthesis, formation of sugars and starches, and nutrient movement within the plant. An estimated 80% of soils in Sub-Saharan Africa are deficient in phosphorus. Phosphorus deficiency in plants causes poor root development and hence the uptake of water and nutrients from the soil or growing medium is reduced. Leaf development is also retarded, resulting in plants that have fewer and smaller leaves, reduced photosynthesis, and limited productivity. Look after those Earthworms Earthworms play a crucial role in improving soil quality, and every farmer, landscaper and gardener should try to maintain a healthy population of these remarkable creatures. How earthworms help the farmer, landscaper and gardener. Earthworms tunnel through the upper layers of soil in a constant search for food, and this improves soil structure. The tunnels aerate the soil and help with water drainage, and the action of tunnelling loosens the soil. Earthworms also perform the following useful functions: ~They pull organic material down into the soil, which improves soil quality. In addition, nutrients in the organic material they consume are released for the plants to use. ~ Earthworm casts give the soil an ideal, crumb-like texture. ~ According to Charné Myburgh of the Agricultural Research Council’s Grain Crops Institute, studies have found that the casts contain more nitrogen, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium and calcium than is present in the surrounding soil. ~ Earthworms help control nematode populations as well as pathogenic fungi in soil, ingesting these together with the organic material. On the other hand, the earthworms’ presence stimulates microbial activity. “Good soil microbiology is very important as soil micro-organisms and enzymes regulate nutrient cycling,” says Myburgh. Is the South African wine industry going to survive amid a rapidly changing climate? Winemaking has thrived at the southern tip of the continent for more than 300 years, benefiting from a diversity of microclimates to build a rich culture and a world-class industry. However, as climate and viticultural experts reveal, the Cape Winelands is facing an existential threat from shifting weather conditions that create an uncertain future for some of the Southern Hemisphere’s leading wine areas. No Room To Hide: Climate Change in the Cape Winelands is a documentary produced by Food For Mzansi https://lnkd.in/dAYgUKt2

Organic growing is our heritage in South Africa. For centuries, our ancestors have cultivated the land in a sustainable way, using natural methods to improve soil fertility and grow healthy crops. Today, organic farming is more important than ever, as it helps to protect our environment and provide us with nutritious food. Organic farming is a way of life that is deeply connected to the land. It is about working with nature, not against it. Organic farmers use natural methods to improve soil health, control pests and diseases, and grow nutrient-rich food. Organic farming is also good for the environment. It helps to reduce pollution, conserve water, and protect biodiversity. Organic farms are also more resilient to climate change, as they are less reliant on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. When you choose organic food, you are supporting a sustainable way of life and helping to protect our planet for future generations.
