About us
The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) consists of a team dedicated to increasing glass recycling and the re-use of returnable bottles in South Africa. We are passionate about ensuring every South African realises the value of recycling & reusing glass and actively embraces these practices. TGRC was established in July 2006 following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the National Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) and South Africa’s glass manufacturers and the manufacturers of the fillers who are shareholders in the company. While we do not physically recycle the glass, we strive to educate, enable, encourage and inspire communities to separate their glass for recycling daily. Our focus is not only on consumers, but also on corporate South Africa. We also aim to uplift impoverished communities through job creation and skills development in the recycling sector. In addition to our Shareholders our partners include: • Members of the public who are active recyclers • Potential new recyclers • Informal collectors who collect glass for an income • Entrepreneurs who manage buy back centres • Government TGRC enables glass recycling by placing glass banks at key locations in the community to allow for ease of recycling. We also assist entrepreneurs in setting up buy-back centres with the information and knowledge and where possible equipment to run viable businesses. Entrepreneurs buy glass from collectors the majority of whom are unemployed individuals. There are approximately 50 000 glass collectors in SA. Our shareholders are dedicated to helping us promote glass recycling, reuse and the use of returnable bottle systems.
