Tswalu Kalahari Reserve is dedicated to protecting South Africa's most endangered carnivore, the African wild dog. Wild dog packs need large habitats to survive. In today's new blog post, Dr Wendy Panaino, Tswalu's assistant ecologist, explains some of the challenges: “Wild dogs are capable of escaping fenced reserves and travelling long distances. To monitor their movements, we typically collar the alpha female as the rest of the pack will follow her around. A satellite collar allows us to remotely monitor the pack’s movements across the reserve so that if they do escape, we can track them down easily. The collar updates to Earth Ranger a few times a day for remote monitoring. On World Nature Conservation Day, Tswalu is thrilled to welcome these wild dog pups. The alpha female was reported denning at the beginning of July, and the first sighting of the new litter was eagerly awaited. This morning, eight pups were counted but there may be more. As a privately protected area, Tswalu offers a vast habitat for these endangered carnivores to roam and hunt. Conserving and restoring the biodiversity of the semi-arid southern Kalahari is at the heart of our conservation vision. Last year, Tswalu’s conservation team was cautiously optimistic when 12 wild dog pups were born on the reserve, swelling the existing pack and adding an exciting dimension to game drives. All of them survived. The birth of a new litter emphasises the value of Tswalu’s regenerative conservation model and the role played by vast wilderness areas when it comes to protecting these endangered species. The work of the Tswalu Foundation provides rare access to Masters and PhD students working on projects that will inform future conservation and wildlife management decisions. ⁠It adds a fascinating dimension to any safari. ⁠ Between black-maned lion sightings, tracking desert black rhinos or keeping your eyes peeled for an aardvark, guests can chat with one of the PhD students, like Elizabeth Koverton, who is studying the ecological role of cheetahs and their impact on prey populations at Tswalu. ⁠ Camera traps with GPS and VHF tracking collars are some of the tools of the trade helping Elizabeth to determine the density and diet of the cheetahs on the reserve and how they use different habitats. She is also studying their response to the presence of prey and competing carnivore species. ⁠ ⁠ Access to real-time scientific research is one aspect that gives Tswalu the edge. TSWALU - MUSES OF THE KALAHARI A solo exhibition showcasing the work of Gary Stephens, following a residency at Tswalu, has debuted in Johannesburg at Fireblade Aviation.⁠ ⁠ Tswalu's iconic landscapes inspired the artist during his three-month residency - another successful collaboration between the Tswalu Foundation and Everard Read Johannesburg.
