The UDS Team was led by a formidable team comprising of Archibald Mchunu, Brandon Harvey, Luandru La Grange and Louis De Jager. In their debut at this annual competition, they managed a respectful 3rd place overall! ❗ ❗Quality in Air – Redefining Drone Surveillance in South Africa❗ ❗ (Yip - I am challenging the "Time in Air is the alpha and omega" rhetoric) In the drone security industry, there’s often a focus on maximizing a drone’s time in the air. While airtime is undoubtedly important for several reasons, I believe it should be seen as only one part of a broader equation. The real game-changer is Quality in Air. Quality in Air isn't about simply staying airborne; it’s about what happens during every minute of that flight. This includes deploying advanced technologies—like thermal imaging for detecting suspects at night, AI-powered movement and person detection, and other cutting-edge tools that transform mere airtime into actionable intelligence. But even the best technology requires a skilled operator… This is where the role of the drone pilot becomes essential. A drone pilot in the security industry is more than just an RPC holder; they are a PSIRA qualified security professional trained in various protocols, capable of guiding ground teams to respond effectively to threats. In South Africa’s unique and often unpredictable security landscape, it takes a trained eye, sharp intuition, and an understanding of criminal tactics to make quick, informed decisions. This is another reason why I believe autonomous drones aren’t yet ready for the South African security sector. While they offer impressive capabilities in controlled environments, they lack the real-time, adaptive thinking that a trained (onsite) pilot can provide. Until AI can match the instinct, experience, and on-the-ground understanding of a skilled pilot, the best defence remains a drone piloted by a security professional.
