Most adult learners have limited time available to invest in education. They need convenient learning solutions that still offer networking opportunities and high-touch support. For these learners, semi-synchronous learning is ideal. This approach combines the engagement of “synchronous” learning, where learners attend classes and events in real time, with the flexibility of self-paced or “asynchronous” learning. In semi-synchronous models, learners can engage with content and exercises at their own pace while still benefitting from instructor support, community interaction, and the motivational power of achieving key milestones. Semi-synchronous models therefore include both synchronous and asynchronous elements, such as: ▶️ A clear learning pathway with videos and guided projects 💬 A thriving peer community nurtured by an instructor 🎤 Live Q&A sessions and practice workshops 📅 Deadlines for major milestones Ensure that learners know what to do and feel supported and connected. Providing clear instructions and maintaining consistent communication through email or discussion boards will boost their confidence. Have you had success with semi-synchronous learning design in practice? No matter how many books you read about riding a bicycle, the only way to learn is by getting on one. You might fall a few times, but you'll only truly master it through trying and failing—through ★experience★. In the world of learning design, experiential learning is where learners gain knowledge and skills by applying new processes or concepts in real-world or simulated settings. This approach encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and experimentation. Experiential learning can include: ➡ Interactive simulations that mimic real-world scenarios. ➡ Group projects that require collaboration and application of concepts. ➡ Guided workplace experience with access to mentorship and feedback. If you think your learner might be the sort of person who skips the user manual and goes straight to fiddling with their new Air Fryer, this approach might be appropriate for your project. Just be sure to provide your learners with just enough context and instruction to accompany that experience (like having a recipe while baking a cake), as well as ample personalised feedback, and you’ll design an elegantly scaffolded experiential learning intervention. When facilitating experiential learning, monitor your learners carefully to ensure they approach the exercises with enough confidence. Provide additional support to those who are feeling too uncertain to make the most of the opportunity. Have you had success with experiential learning interventions in practice? Let us know in the comments!. #learningexperiencedesign #learningdesign #transitioningteachers #learninganddevelopment #instructionaldesign #elearning #experientiallearning
