Informing the emergence of a 21st Century model of mining that is both sustainable and competitive.
About us
👉 The Wits Mining Institute (WMI) was established to inform the emergence of a 21st Century model of mining that is both sustainable and competitive. 👉 Our primary focus at the WMI is the production of research of the highest quality to address large multi-disciplinary and complex questions. This will be achieved through five research units which draw on the experience of individuals with decades of mining experience. These units and their core focus are summarised below: • Sibanye Stillwater Digital Mining Laboratory (DigiMine) • SAMERDI Successful Applications of Technology Centred Around People (SATCAP) Research Centre • SAMERDI Real Time Information Management Systems (RTIMS) Research Centre • WMI Responsible Mining Laboratory • WMI Skills Accelerator 👉 To learn more about the core focus of the research units, visit our website at https://www.wits.ac.za/wmi/ 👉 The Wits Mining Institute is a one-of-a-kind laboratory with a significant research agenda to transfer surface digital technologies into the underground environment. Mission: - Promoting innovation and sustainability in the extractive sectors through skills and technology.

When it comes to mining and resource extraction, we need to take an ‘ecosystems thinking’ approach. This means considering the full lifecycle and impact; not just the short-term economic benefits, but also the environmental, social and governance (ESG) implications. We have a responsibility to use evidence and science to inform decision-making. In his keynote speech on the seminar’s second day, DRDGOLD CEO Niël Pretorius pointed out the importance of mining companies implementing “realistic” ESG initiatives. He stressed the need for mining companies to prioritise land rehabilitation during operations, rather than delaying it until the end of asset lifecycles. As a company already contributing to the circular economy, DRDGOLD focuses on improving operations and reducing the financial costs of environmental restoration. Pretorius said that there were economic opportunities for mining companies to implement relevant ESG initiatives, such as reducing potable water consumption and investing in programmes that support the informal economy. This proactive approach, he said, has helped DRDGOLD lower its risk profile, build a stronger reputation, and ensure long-term financial sustainability. The Wits Mining Institute is part of the partnership with #MQA to drive the mining and minerals sector through research. University of the Witwatersrand
Super excited to be part of the South Africa Mining Qualification Authority (MQA) Inaugural Research Colloquium where the University of the Witwatersrand's Wits Mining Institute is an integral research partner. Some of key take-away from the morning sessions are: 🎯 Mining contributes over 477 000 direct jobs in #South #Africa. 🎯Mining contributed R186.5 billion in employee #earnings in 2023. 🎯The industry contributed R14.1 billion in #royalties. To keep this very important industry sustainable, the #MQA is at the centre of skills development of the #mining and #minerals #sector to create the resilient mine employees of the future. They have adopted a new theme "Mining Future Skills" to underscore the importance of ongoing research and collaboration with industry, research institutes and all stakeholders. Their research finds that the industry could do more if we find ways to deal with structural rigidities including, #price volatility, #logistics infrastructure challenges, and #energy supply bottlenecks. #MQA #SETA #Education #Training mining #research #ASM

The Wits Mining Institute is running a Fundamentals of OHS in #Mining to provide health and safety practitioners a handle on the building blocks of #OHS. This course is followed up by the OHS Practice where the building blocks are put to practice. By doing this, Wits Mining Institute aims to building capabilities of professionals to ensure "everyone gets home safe, healthy and well and that they stay that way". The programme looks beyond the mine fence, but emphasise the importance of creating #safe and #healthy environments for host #communities.
#Mine #Health and #Safety is becoming an integral element of the industry's #ESG strategy. I am enjoying co-facilitating on the Sibanye-Stillwater Fundamentals of OHS in Mining short course at the University of the Witwatersrand's Wits Mining Institute. Some of the key highlights of today's presentations came from our Guest facilitator Dr Tshepo Sedibe who heads health and safety at De Beers Group. These are some of the highlights: 🚤 The nature of risks are varying in form and severity from near misses to fatalities, from vehicle accidents to aviation and maritime accidents as the industry becomes complex. ⚓ Leadership and commitment should be central to any OHS strategy as employees do not necessarily do what the leadership says but what it does. leaders need to realise the burden of leading by example when it comes to OHS. ⚓Contractors add a layer of complexity to how we manage OHS as there is massive turnover and other financial challenges that may indirectly have a bearing on OHS performance. ⚓How we manage contractors, including the time we take to finalise contracting has a bearing on performance. ⚓Above all, we need to think about what drives investor decisions...ESG has become topical and our OHS strategy therefore needs to integrate safety beyond the fence as communities are very important. ⚓How do we articulate the value proposition for OHS to our communities, employees and leadership? ⚓Use of data is important for articulating our value proposition. #OHS #risk #management

Mr Jean-Jacques Verhaeghe, RTIMS Programme Manager at Mandela Mining Precinct is facilitating a panel discussion on Digital Technology and Cybersecurity at WMI Seminar 2024 underway at the Wits Origins Centre University of the Witwatersrand. Some key takeaways include: #Data is an important element of digital technology. #interoperability and data ownership needs to be at the centre to avoid uncertainty so that dat is managed and data is transmitted effectively. #modernisation means how do share data among #OMEs , mining houses and within the mining organizations. #integration of technology systems is important and there is therefore need for collaboration beyond what is only convenient. #Flexibility and agility: organisations have to look at their entire business model, including structures that support digital transformation. #Business case : we need to look at Digital Transformation with a lens beyond just Rands and Cents but look at people and the broader case based on value such as stakeholder expectations. Smaller things are big gains when we look at the potifolia as a whole. Every idea that comes starts from what drives value? Then see how can digital transformation creates the value as such opportunities are not always apparent. The way we have imagined business case has to change. #Ready to fail: digital transformation is a process that calls for courage to try and fail. #Gaming can play a role in testing technology #Agent based system integration provides huge opportunities to deal with the concerns of OEMs regarding the challenges of legacy systems. #Enterprise architecture may be accepted in the broader organisation when looked at as a solution architecture to avoid the complexity that comes with comprehending this abstract concept. #AI will transform the way we do business but it is important to imagine the extent to which models are transferable in different situations. #people will not lose jobs because of AI but because of people who know AI #Ethics become critical when we think about AI #partnerships with academic institutions will be important for mining value chains #There are huge opportunities for mining companies and other stakeholders to collaborate and create a sustainable industry #integratedsystems #enterprisearchitecture #systemsinterface
