Empowering Mothers, Shaping Futures in Burundi A strong start in life begins with empowered mothers. In Burundi, we are working to ensure that every child is born safely, grows up healthy, and is protected from harm. When women can plan their families and access care, they can build brighter futures for their children and communities. Together, we can transform lives and shape a resilient future for all. #MothersMatter #BurundiECD #EmpowerWomen Read More: https://ow.ly/9Bfa50TLroJ

A world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled
About us
UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, expands the possibilities for women and young people to lead healthy and productive lives. UNFPA is the lead United Nations agency for delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. We are making great progress on the African continent. Since 1990, the rate of maternal deaths in Africa has almost halved, and the CARMMA initiative is helping to speed up progress. More women and men are better able to plan and space their children. Young people are more empowered in sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights. Yet there is much still to be done. Globally, the region is the most affected by HIV, which remains a major contributor to maternal mortality. Women are particularly affected, young women more so. A contributing factor is gender-based violence, which remains widespread. There are high rates of pregnancy-related school drop-outs. The region also faces an unprecedented rise in the number of adolescents and young people. There is a high population growth rate, the result of a substantial decrease in mortality rates and high fertility in 15 countries. This is why meaningful action is required in the areas of health – including sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), family planning and HIV reduction – education and employment to make the demographic dividend work for economic growth and development transformation in the region.

🌍 People on the Move - see how United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is advancing reproductive health and rights for displaced women and girls in East and Southern Africa. In a recent event hosted by the Government of Kenya and UNFPA, regional humanitarian leaders tackled the escalating crises affecting millions across the region. With 65 million people in need of urgent assistance, women and girls—disproportionately impacted by conflict and climate change—are at the heart of the conversation. UNFPA Regional Director Lydia Zigomo emphasized, "Access to sexual and reproductive health is not a luxury—it is a lifeline.” From innovative solutions like mobile health clinics in Mozambique to motorcycle ambulances in Kenya, the urgency of stronger partnerships and policy frameworks has never been clearer. It was a privilege to be one of the panelists on the roundtable on “People on the Move: Advancing SRHR in Humanitarian Settings,” where UNFPA, the Government, and other stakeholders shared their efforts and insights. It was enlightening to learn about the innovative approaches being implemented to support sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in crisis situations. Unfortunately, both natural and man-made disasters continue to cause significant displacements. Currently, over 65 million people are affected in Africa, with 23 million from the Horn of Africa alone. The discussions highlighted the importance of building resilience and creating robust systems and services to better manage these displacements. The roundtable explored innovative strategies to enhance the capacity of individuals, communities, and systems for effective humanitarian response, recovery, and resilience. It is crucial for all actors—state, non-state, and others—to ensure that vulnerable individuals, including children, youth, and women, have the capacity to withstand crises and that their well-being and livelihoods are protected and restored. Earlier today, our Regional Director, Chege Ngugi, spoke at the East and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) Regional Humanitarian Donor Round Table meeting hosted by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The theme, "People on the Move: Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in Humanitarian Settings," focused on the policy landscape in delivering effective SRHR programs in humanitarian crises, particularly for people affected by climate-related disasters. "It is imperative that we scale up efforts to help communities and local governments better understand both slow and sudden onset climate events and their connection to child and youth health and protection issues. Often, slow-onset events go unnoticed, affecting vulnerable communities—especially girls, who are the first to drop out of school under all kinds of pressure. This increases their vulnerability to risks such as gender-based violence, long before a disaster is officially declared," Chege Ngugi noted. #humanitarianaction #climateaction #SRHR #GBV #policy #Africa ChildFund International

🌍✨ Today, we concluded the Regional Humanitarian Partners Round Table in Nairobi, centered on "People on the Move: Advancing SRHR in Humanitarian Settings." United with our @UNFPA East and Southern Africa donors and partners, we reflected on the urgent needs of women and girls displaced by crises. As we shared stories of resilience, like that of a young mother fleeing violence or a girl whose education was interrupted, we recognized our moral imperative to safeguard their rights and dignity. This event was more than a meeting; it was a call to action, highlighting the complexities of humanitarian crises and our collective responsibility to respond with compassion. Together, we explored innovative approaches to empower vulnerable populations and forged stronger policy insights to ensure access to vital sexual and reproductive health services. By weaving local knowledge with global expertise, we aimed to create tailored interventions for those most affected. As we move forward, our partnerships remain our greatest strength. Together, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every individual, especially the most marginalized, has the opportunity to thrive. No one should be left behind. #HumanitarianResponse #SRHR #Partnerships🇺🇳#UNFPA #WomenAndGirls #EastAndSouthernAfrica #PeopleOnTheMove💫 Ebele Michael Ayanda Ntombela Anders Thomsen Chipo Tawanda Chimwanda Lydia Zigomo Chege Ngugi
