THE REASON BEHIND THE THEME OF THIS YEARS BERELEVANT YOUTH SUMMIT: DIRECTORS VIEW Mwila Chriseddy Bwanga The 2024 BeRelevant Youth Summit proudly adopts the theme, “We Are the Ones We Have Been Waiting For,” a powerful call to action that seeks to disrupt long-standing narratives and stereotypes often associated with young people. Youth in Zambia - and across the world are frequently labeled as lazy, social media-driven, irresponsible, entitled, and only fit for cheap labor. Stereotypes such as laziness and entitlement have painted young people as passive participants in society. However, this years theme shatters this view by presenting youth as proactive, energetic, and committed to creating meaningful change. The narrative of being "social media-driven" is reframed; rather than being distracted by social platforms, young leaders are using digital tools to build networks, drive advocacy, and amplify their voices for positive impact. The idea that youth are merely cheap labor is replaced with the truth, that they are innovative problem-solvers capable of building sustainable businesses, spearheading technology advancements, and leading in governance. This summit’s theme boldly challenges these misconceptions by emphasizing that young people are not only ready to lead but are already doing so. It asserts that youth are not waiting for someone else to solve the problems in their communities—they are the very solutions their nation has been waiting for.
