Port of Beira Sets New Record for Cargo Volume In a significant milestone for Mozambique's maritime infrastructure, the Port of Beira achieved a remarkable 122% growth in cargo volume during July 2024. This surge propelled the port's monthly cargo throughput to an unprecedented 442,000 tonnes, surpassing the previous high of 199,000 tonnes recorded in July 2023. This exceptional performance underscores the port's increasing role as a pivotal link in the regional logistics and trade network. Miguel de Jenga, Operations Director at Cornelder de Moçambique, the company managing the port, attributed this record-breaking tonnage to the port's growing importance and enhanced operational efficiency. The positive momentum at the Port of Beira has persisted throughout the year. From January to July 2024, the general cargo terminal handled 24% more volume compared to the same period in 2023. The container terminal, a critical component of the port's infrastructure, experienced an even more impressive 40% growth, processing 226,000 containers compared to 160,000 the previous year. Several factors contributed to this surge in cargo handling. A significant increase in the importation of clinker and corn, essential commodities for Mozambique's market, played a key role. Additionally, imports of wheat, equipment, and sulfur have risen substantially, not only to meet domestic demand but also to supply neighboring countries. The Port of Beira has also expanded its market reach, attracting new clients such as Zambia. The port is now a major export hub for eucalyptus and manganese from Zambia, further solidifying its position as a regional logistics hub. While Zimbabwe remains the largest user of the Port of Beira, relying primarily on the port for exports of chrome, lithium, petalite, and tobacco, the recent volume records highlight the port's expanding role in regional trade. The growth in cargo volume at the Port of Beira reflects improvements in infrastructure, operations, and overall efficiency, aligning with Mozambique's economic and trade development goals. As the port continues to expand its operations and services, it is poised to play an even more significant role in regional logistics. The record-breaking cargo volume achieved in July 2024 represents a new benchmark for the port's future performance and demonstrates its potential for continued growth and influence in the coming years. In July 2024, the Port of Beira’s General Cargo Terminal achieved a historic milestone by processing a record-breaking 442,000 tons each month. This impressive feat, which represents a 122% increase over the 199,000 tons handled in July 2023, demonstrates the port’s expanding relevance as a major logistical hub in southern Africa. The spike in imports to meet regional and domestic demand was a major factor in the cargo volume’s exceptional growth. Notably, the importation of maize and clinker—commodities necessary for Mozambique’s agricultural and building industries—rose significantly. Wheat, machinery, and sulfur imports—all essential for a number of businesses in nearby nations—also saw a notable increase at the facility. These imports support both the local economy in Mozambique and the broader region, enhancing the Port of Beira’s significance as a key entry point for southern Africa.
