Cato: Buttered Cat (2024) is a silly running and jumping puzzle game where you alternately control a cat and a piece of buttered toast. The cat can run and climb and the toast can fling itself, but combined they can jump as much as they want. It's a cute application of the common truth that cats always land on their feet and the toast that always lands butter-side down, to create challenging (and adorable) anti-gravity puzzles.

As the cat, you can't jump. You can only run, crawl through tubes and climb certain wall or ceiling surfaces. As the toast, you can jump along the ground or up and off walls. When the two come together, you can jump when already in the air, enabling you to fly as high and far as you’d like. The catch is some puzzles contain blockages that force you to find a way through with each character separately, for example requiring the toast to open a door for the cat, or more simply by special barriers that block the two when combined.

As you progress, the puzzles become more complex, requiring greater thought and planning to overcome. New mechanics are introduced such as toasters that launch the toast in a straight line. Through trial and error, you can figure out how to combine all the mechanics to complete each puzzle.

The result is a cute yet challenging platforming game where the difficulty lies in puzzling out the route rather than perfectly timed jumps. Becoming familiar with the way each character can move is vital for success, which can take practice.
