Did you know that we are the official partners for the UAE National Sequestration Plan? Under our Trees Matter initiative we support the UAE target to plant 100 million mangrove trees by 2030. Mangrove forests play a key role in protecting the UAE's coastlines from rising sea levels and storms, they provide habitats for marine species, and act as natural carbon sinks. The UAE is home to 60 million mangrove trees, covering an area of 183 square kilometres that capture 43,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. With the addition of 100 million mangrove trees, the total cover will reach 483 square kilometres that can capture 115,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually! Join our efforts and be part of this impactful initiative! 🌳🌳🌳 Contact Nasrin Suleiman or Janelle Requizo-Lopez to learn more.
Did you know? Mangroves don’t always prefer saltwater — many species have simply adapted to tolerate it! Different mangrove species have varying salt tolerance levels and unique ways of managing it. For instance, Avicennia mangroves have evolved to thrive in high-salt environments, while others can only handle low salt levels before they’re at risk. Avicennia marina, commonly known as the Grey Mangrove, is a superstar species in the UAE! Not only can it tolerate high salt levels, but it also excretes excess salt through special glands in its leaves — you might even spot salt crystals on them— and if you are curious enough to lick a leaf, you will taste the salt too! Why is this adaptation so important? High salt levels can act like a drought, pulling water out of the plant’s roots and causing it to wither. This is why, when restoring a mangrove forest, it’s essential to match the salinity of the soil with the right species. #TreesMatter #Goumbook #Changingmindsets #MangroveRestoration #ClimateAction #EcoAwareness #NatureAdaptations
