Earlier this year I had the honor to contribute to the Police Innovation Leadership training, hosted in Dubai by Dubai Police, academically facilitated by Rochester Institute of Technology, Dubai (RIT Dubai). It turned out to be one of the most amazing training experiences ever steered in my career: 46 Police professionals from 31 different nations - from Poland to UAE, from Mauritius to Indonesia, from Ireland to USA. I was asked to organize a four day module on 'Policing the Smart City.' How does one design a course on this topic without it becoming a workshop on digital surveillance? What does it mean to be an effective leader in policing in our digitalized urban environments? What skills does it take? How does digital allow for a policing culture to become more pro-active rather than reactive only and how can that be organized? How does one design the safe neighborhood of tomorrow and what would that look like? If we step away from architecting a car-centric city, if we step away from taking the job of policing as the starting point, if only for a day, and ask police professionals to design a healthcare centric city, then what would that look like? What digital designs and tools beyond those of surveillance will change the role and nature of policing in the future, and how do we prepare for it? Joining me for a day in the course was Urban Innovators Global community member Knut Schoenfelder who is one of the leads designing the security strategy at #Neom in Saudi - fabulous to have him involved. Grateful to my friend, peer, co-author of the Arabic Edition of #ANewDigitalDeal, Dean of RIT Dubai Dr. Yousef M. Al-Assaf for having invited me in. And a large round of applause for Dubai Police for having had the vision, foresight and audacity to organize this immense, fully unique, multiple month program. See article below!
