Earlier this week, Veolia Near & Middle East, in collaboration with BEEAH Group, Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company), and Emirates Waste to Energy, celebrated the transformation of 500,000 tonnes of waste at the Sharjah Waste to Energy facility. This event, hosted at BEEAH Headquarters, renowned for its iconic architecture, featured special guests such as Jean-Christophe Paris, Consul General of the French Republic to the UAE, Khaled Al Huraimel, BEEAH Group CEO & Vice Chairman, Fawaz Al Muharrami, Deputy Chief Operating Officer at Masdar, Hamza Al Jefri, CEO of Emirates Waste to Energy, and Philippe BOURDEAUX, our Executive Senior Vice President of Veolia Africa & Middle East. Their inspiring words and presence marked a pivotal step towards achieving zero-waste in Sharjah. After the ceremony, there was a site visit to the Sharjah Waste to Energy plant, operated by Emirates Waste to Energy. Since its launch in 2023, the plant has abated 750,000 tonnes of CO2 and recovered 2,000 tonnes of metal. The plant currently generates 33 megawatts (MW) of electricity, with 30 MW exported to the grid, powering up to 28,000 homes and offsetting 450,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. The milestone is a testament to the joint efforts in achieving zero waste to landfill and advancing the UAE’s clean energy goals. The Sharjah Waste to Energy plant, which has now operated more than 300,000 hours without any lost-time incidents, is a beacon for sustainability and innovation in the UAE, setting a new standard for waste-to-energy projects in the Middle East and beyond.
