SHORE POWER FOR OSV FLEET Our recent project with a key client here in the UAE was to upgrade three Offshore Supply Vessels (OSVs) to have an automated shore power connection. Key Upgrades: 1) Controller Replacement: We replaced the outdated Woodward EGCP3 controllers with Woodward easYgen 3500XT controller, which also significantly improved diagnostics and operational efficiency. 2) Shore Power Breaker: The ability to synchronize and soft load between generators and shore power was implemented by fitting a motorized breaker, controlled by a Woodward LS5 controller, connected via CAN to the easYgen’s. • Impact: •Achieved significant reductions in fuel consumption and emissions, including visible smoke. •Extended generator maintenance cycles due to reduced engine operating hours (especially at low loads). •Delivered a reliable, user-friendly system that aligns with our client's sustainability goals. This project underscores Goltens commitment to providing innovative solutions that promote environmental sustainability in maritime operations.

The aging of components increases the risk of unplanned shutdowns, and obsolescence of component create severe problems which can make these shutdowns more expensive. The financial losses, in terms of lost operation due to unexpected shutdown, resulting from the failure of a simple component, may be quite out of proportion to its relatively inexpensive cost. Thus, retrofitting an integrated engine control solution to replace the outdated system increases engine reliability, performance with improved fuel efficiency and lower emission.

Last week in Dubai, #SEG conducted an extensive training with our Goltens Energy Control Solutions customers on our HighPROTEC series protection devices and the new self-powered "WIC1 g2" relay. Application and service engineers from the Energy Control Solutions and Automation departments received in-depth theoretical and practical training from Rainer Hans, covering topics such as how to parameterize and configure the relays to meet all requirements using our intuitive and user-friendly SEG software "Smart view". Goltens recently upgraded two Alarm Monitoring Safety Control (AMSC) systems on Wabtec V228 engines on an Offshore Support Vessel. Replacement panels utilizing Woodward's marine-approved Flex500 hardware, running custom GAP™ software were supplied. This solution incorporated control and monitoring stations local to the engines, in the ECR and Wheel House. The upgraded AMSC system integrated seamlessly with the existing vessel propulsion controls and 12V228 Engine Controllers by utilizing the Flex500 multiple communication capabilities, that ensured integrity of critical functions such as start/stop sequencing, engine speed/load control and safety systems. The systems were tested rigorously, including Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) with the customer and classification society before installation and sea trial. A complete documentation package was provided to ensure a smooth handover. Goltens can also provide a drop in replacement of the V228 Engine controller. Our first batch of Woodward easYgen controllers, enclosed in preassembled units, is now ready for dispatch to the customer. These enclosures come with interposing relays for DI/DOs, control MCBs, and plug-in connectors, simplifying installation and reducing downtime. Goltens completed the upgrade of the Integrated Turbine and Compressor Control (ITCC) systems for two trains at the Dangote Fertilizer Plant in Nigeria. The contract included upgrading all 8 Micronet™ Plus, iFIX HMI and ProTech systems. Additionally, the Woodward Remote Access Program( RAP) was supplied, enabling secure remote support from Goltens Dubai. Following the engineering phase, the FAT was conducted in Dubai during which time training was also provided, with further site training after the commissioning. The hardware was delivered to the site in three consolidated batches directly from Woodward: one batch for each of the two trains and a batch of common spares, including valves and actuators. All deliveries were as planned, allowing the installation and commissioning teams to upgrade each train with minimal downtime. The project was supported by Woodward in the Middle East, India (formerly PM Controls), and Japan; working together the execution was flawless, resulting in a very satisfied customer.

Upgrading an Obsolete Woodward 721 Control System on an LNG Tanker with Goltens' IDC-2 Another success story of a recent project where Goltens successfully upgraded of obsolete Woodward 721 control system with IDC-2 for an LNG tanker Vessel ensuring efficient integration and minimal downtime. Challenge: The vessel's main engine faced a failure of its Woodward 721 control system, forcing speed control operation to backup mode (mechanical governor mode). As the 721 is obsolete and no longer available in the market place an alternative solution was required. Solution: Goltens' IDC-2 provided a straightforward, plug-and-play replacement for the Woodward 721, utilizing the latest Woodward FLEX 500 platform while preserving all original functionalities. Highlights of the IDC-2 include: •Matching mounting and wiring connection points: Ensures easy integration without changes to the existing panel configurations or wiring. •Pre-configured and tested in advance: Avoids the need for extensive custom design and testing, significantly reducing project duration and expenses. •Software transfer and adaptation: Allows for the smooth transition of the 721's application software to the IDC-2 platform, maintaining operational consistency and crew familiarity. •Limited training needs: The user interface and operation mirror those of the 721, decreasing the necessity for extensive crew training and facilitating a smooth operational shift RESULTS: The IDC-2 by Goltens emerged as an efficient solution for modernizing the ship’s control system, offering smooth integration, quick one to one replacement so minimizing field service costs associated with traditional approaches.
