jOiNEd For sUsTainability - bUilding climate REsilient communities in WB and EU
About us
The 1Future project builds up on the needs and the ambition to lead climate action in HEIs in the Balkan Region. Within the project, HEIs will serve as the gear that connects different stakeholders for building climate resilient communities in third countries not associated to EU in the Balkan Region. The short-term impact of the project involve the implementation of tangible measures in each WBC HEI during its duration. Staff and students will witness the materialization of project goals when modernized courses and the new Hubs will be established within WBC HEIs. Revised courses and the short intensive courses implemented in each HEI will serve to raise awareness within HEI communities on climate and sustainability issues. Economic and social development are widely affected by the impacts of climate change. It is of critical importance that higher education system contribute to building capacities and interdisciplinary knowledge for a sustainable and resilient society, able to build back better our vulnerable economies. Investors, insurers, businesses, cities and citizens across the EU and the Balkans should be able to access data and to develop instruments to integrate climate change into their risk management practices. This project is relevant to the objectives and activities of the CBHE action within the Erasmus+ Program. It is based on identified needs analysis performed in each of the target countries of Region 1 and of the target groups and final beneficiaries. The wider aim and the specific objectives of the project are in line with “Green Deal” EU overarching priority, as a project that supports action within higher education systems for creating climate resilient communities.

🌊 Every year, eight million tons of plastic waste flows from land to sea. 🌊 Plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental disasters, severely affecting our oceans and seas. Its impact on human health, animal health, biodiversity, and its role in global warming poses a significant threat. 🚨 The Mediterranean Sea, known for its diverse biodiversity, is also the most polluted sea in the world. Studies estimate that around 33 thousand tons of microplastics are dumped into it annually, with plastic making up 95% of marine litter. The INCA and University of Tirana joined the meeting held in Elbasan to address plastic pollution in the Shkumbin River. Local and national stakeholders gathered to strengthen knowledge on this issue and launch a 2-year pilot action plan. The proposed measures target the waste management sector, HoReCa sector, and sports sector, focusing on sustainability and long-term goals. 🧑🎓 The participation of students from the universities of Tirana and Elbasan was crucial. They gained essential knowledge on analyzing the situation, assessing pollution risks, evaluating measures to reduce the impact, and engaging stakeholders comprehensively. Together, they aim to identify pollution sources and manage them sustainably to reduce the risk of pollution and decrease plastic use. Let's work together to tackle plastic pollution and protect our precious seas in a sustainable way! 🌊🌍♻️
