Info
CeMM, the Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences is an international, independent and interdisciplinary research institute. CeMM is pursuing applied research in the field of molecular medicineby merging basic and clinical research of cancer, inflammatory processes and immunological diseases. The focus of interest of CeMM are people and their diseases. CeMM uses the knowledge from basic and clinical research to develop innovative therapeutic and diagnostic strategies. Located at the Vienna General Hospital (AKH), the largest medical research complex in Austria, it acts as a link between basic research and clinical application. CeMM is giving access to post-genomic technologies and is also a training and teaching center for a new generation of scientists in the field of Molecular medicine. The long term goal of CeMM is to contribute to the preparation predictive, preventive and personalized medicine of the future.

👏 Thank you to Andreas Schlitzer from the University of Bonn for his insightful impromptu seminar today at CeMM. It was a pleasure to learn more about the research from the Schlitzer lab, exploring the spatial and functional regulation of dendritic cells using cutting edge technologies like single-cell mRNA sequencing and in vivo differentiation assays. His talk sparked great interest among the audience, leading to an engaging discussion and many questions. A special thanks also to CeMM PI Barbara Maier for hosting this session!

Today Florian Praetorius from ISTA gave an Impromptu Seminar at CeMM. Hosted by CeMM PI Georg Winter, Florian held a talk about four-dimensional protein design. Showcasing work from his time with David Baker in Seattle and his vision for his budding lab at ISTA, Florian explained how they use deep-learning based computational approaches to build optimized protein assemblies. In a modular fashion, they use molecules to position proteins in time and space – leading to new protein assemblies that can react to specific stimuli. In his lab, Florian Praetorius is pioneering approaches like DNA origami to create precision down to nanometer scale. Thank you, Florian, for visiting CeMM and thank you for the lively discussion! 👏

CeMM members had a great time at the Vienna Science Ball 2025 - Wiener Ball der Wissenschaften! Congratulations to Oliver Lehmann and the ball organizing team for a successful #SciBall25 and a wonderful 10th Anniversary! The Vienna Science Ball is an exceptional opportunity to mingle with our colleagues and friends from the research community, and to celebrate the importance of science. Every professional group, every association organizes its own ball in Vienna. Participating in the SciBall at the Vienna City Hall not only gives a chance to check one of the famous Austrian/Viennese traditions but also helps us to remind everybody of the social and cultural importance of the scientific community. From 22-23 January 2025 the annual CeMM Faculty Retreat took place at Weingut Nigl in Senftenberg, Wachau. CeMM PIs and Adjunct PIs discussed how to foster greater social and scientific cohesion among faculty. In five sessions they talked about strategic collaborative programs, translational projects and institutional partnerships, postdoc program and career developments, publication output, and budget, grants and investment plans. CeMM and its Adjunct Faculty members have identical principles of excellence, competitiveness, internationality as well as highest standards in mentoring and training, and they operate in a unique mode of super-cooperation. Retreats, collaborations, dialogue, and involvement in decisions - whether about science, equipment, governance, or culture - are not to be taken for granted. They are the result of long standing and strategic efforts, intention, and great attention of Giulio Superti-Furga, Scientific Director of CeMM as well as the entire Faculty. We thank all participants for their valuable input and CeMM commitment and are looking forward to a successful year 2025! We also thank Michael Bronstein, AITHYRA Scientific Director, for joining parts of the CeMM Faculty retreat. The future is now! https://bit.ly/4gbhPpV Picture gallery (c) Hans Leitner
