🎤 The 3rd period meeting of the TRANSGEO Project took place in Vienna from October 7-9, 2024, hosted by GeoSphere Austria. The first day focused on 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐚 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐓 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥, 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐮𝐠𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐠𝐚𝐩𝐬. On the second day, project activities were reviewed, including challenges with the Engineering Workflow document and responsibilities for the Proof-of-Concept studies. The final day covered the decision tree and criteria catalogue. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐥 (𝐕𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧 – 𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞) is a wine-growing region, combining cultural heritage with scenic landscapes. It is located mainly in Austria but extends into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The subsurface equivalent is the Vienna Basin, which is a geologically young tectonic burial and sedimentary basin in the seam area between Alps, Carpathians and Pannonian Plain. The Vienna Basin's hydrocarbon production began in the early 20th century, with major development after World War II. The region became a significant Central European energy source, peaking mid-century, and continues modest production today. 𝐀𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐡𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐞𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. 💡 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: The feasibility study in the pilot region Weinviertel in Niederösterreich prepared as part of the TRANSGEO Project involves retrofitting abandoned wells with Borehole Heat Exchangers (BHEs). The Weinviertel is a rural agricultural area and one of the main hydrocarbon region in Austria with vast amounts of active and abandoned wells.
