Consider the following: 🦾 The right low-code platform should generate code automatically through visual building blocks and should be able to edit in the integrated development environment of your choice. 🎛️ This makes all code changes visible and easy to track, enabling you to stay in control. ⚠️ Warning: you want to choose a platform with live syncing, where changing an element in the visual environment changes the element in code and vice versa. This way pro and citizen developers can collaborate easily. 🔐 The platform should enable you to avoid vendor-lock in. Your vendor may go out of business, stop supporting the platform or you might simply have new requirements that the platform cannot meet. And you don't want to have to rebuild your app from scratch! ♾️ With a truly open platform you own your app code, freeing you to continue using your app(s) without the platform. 🛒 As you get further in your search for a low-code platform, that once vast list of contenders gets whittled down to just a few top choices. Yet, when you find yourself evaluating their licensing options, it's easy to fall into the trap of focusing too much on your initial needs. I am fairly certain that your first app won't be your last, so my next advice in this series on #unlockinglowcode is to keep a good eye on pricing models. 💲 Some platforms seem affordable at first but costs balloon quickly as usage grows. Their licensing models stunt scalability over time. 📈 Truly adaptive platforms remove artificial limits, allowing unlimited applications and end users to accommodate natural growth. 😯 Hidden fees or tiered pricing based on app/end user counts fail to future-proof investments as demand evolves unpredictably. ⚠️ Beware solutions that lock you into single deployment modes or curb advanced capabilities like CI/CD. Your toolkit must grow with your solutions. 📊 Your roadmap should be set by business drivers, not licensing constraints. Look for unlimited flexibility. Since changing requirements are inevitable, future-focused firms demand licensing that guarantees long-term affordability wherever needs lead. So choose a partner with scalability baked in. Hate the game, not the player. Hate the spreadsheet, not the person who created it. They could be your next ideal citizen developer! 👩💻 I complain about Excel now and then, but there is a huge opportunity in translating spreadsheet skills into low-code development. And this goes over very smoothly. 🧠 Building and maintaining a complicated spreadsheet requires strong logic, an understanding of data types and structures, and organized thinking - all key for software work. So your colleague who's an Excel wizard already has a big head start, as a low-code platform handles the coding aspect. They'd pick up a visual development tool very quickly and will hit the ground running with their ability to create complex nested formulas and model different data scenarios. 🟰 That said, the next time your Excel guru is troubleshooting a formula, see it as an opportunity. Honing their spreadsheet skills could at some point in time translate well to the citizen developer role helping bring more apps to life through low-code. However, before you feel discouraged and turn back around, I'm here to offer a guiding hand. 🫲 In my new series, #unlockinglowcode, together we'll explore how to swiftly identify the right platform for your most pressing needs. 🏃 Today, I'll show you what you should look for when you need fast visual development for complex requirements (a basic requirement in today's industry by now): 1️⃣ Look for options like automated data import, live connections, and the use of standard versus proprietary technologies for data management. 2️⃣ The platform should allow for quick and straightforward visual development and should offer a range of pre-built components (e.g., user and role management, audit logging). 3️⃣ Pick a platform that uses standard SQL databases for better data management and easier integration with other systems. The platform of your choice should also support CRUD-REST services for easy API integration, even for non-coders. 4️⃣ Automating complex business processes requires a platform capable of handling decision logic to enable multi-step actions. 5️⃣ The platform should also support reporting in standard formats and utilize existing templates for convenience. ⚖️ Choosing the right low-code platform involves looking beyond the surface.
