At ACOLA we take the statistic to ❤️ ▪️ 19% – The gender pay gap costs Australian women an average of $18,461 per year. ▪️ More hours, less pay – Women aged 15 to 64 work 2 hours more per week than men on average. ▪️ STEM still isn’t equal – Women make up only 27% of STEM-qualified workers. ▪️ First Nations women face deeper inequality – Their median income is 23.7% less than non-Indigenous women and 47.8% less than men. ▪️ Who’s leading? – Only 9% of ASX300 CEOs are women. ▪️ Where does Australia rank? – 26th globally for gender equality, trailing New Zealand (16th) and Canada (19th)* We know that research and science thrive when diversity is championed. But the data tells us we have a long way to go. This International Women’s Day, let’s move beyond recognition to real change. We’re calling for action – to close gaps, break barriers, and build a future where gender equality isn’t an ambition but a reality. #IWD2025 #GenderEquality #WomenInSTEM #BreakTheBias #AccelerateEquality *Source: Australian Government, Status of Women Report Card, 2024 Prerana Mehta, Lauren Palmer, Louisa James-Pearson, PhD

About us
The Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) is an independent organisation that supports evidence-based interdisciplinary research. ACOLA is the forum whereby Australia’s four independent Learned Academies – Australian Academy of the Humanities, Australian Academy of Science, Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering – come together to contribute to inform national policy and to develop innovative solutions to complex global problems and emerging national needs. The four member academies of ACOLA originally established the unincorporated association National Academies Forum in 1995. The Forum produced reports, contributed at symposia and workshops, and provided policy reviews. In 2010, the organisation had a name change to Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA Council), and established a Secretariat (ACOLA Secretariat Ltd) to support its operations. In 2017, ACOLA embarked on a significant governance review, this has led to the establishment in May 2018 of the current entity: Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA). ACOLA is an established Australian Research Institute as approved by the Australian Department of Education and Training; is a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission; and holds Deductible Gift Recipient status with the Australian Taxation Office. More than 2000 of the nation’s most eminent scientists, researchers, scholars and practitioners contribute to this rich source of expert knowledge
