ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society reposted this
🎉 Thrilled to share that I participated in the HDR/ECR poster competition at the 2024 ADM+S Symposium—and came away with the Judges Award! 🏆 🎯 In this project, we developed a method to create natural language (NL) user profiles from location-based social network check-ins. By integrating behavioral theories, these profiles improve POI prediction accuracy, providing a more transparent, adaptable, and efficient approach to Recommender Systems. 🔗 You can check out our work in preprint here: https://lnkd.in/gU42FxRh 🌟 A huge thank you to my supervisors, Hao X. and Flora Salim, for their guidance and support on my first research paper at UNSW!
The ADM+S annual #symposium brought together researchers from 9 Australian universities, and collaborators, to discuss and plan future research in the evolving landscape of #AI and #ADM across the Centre’s #mobilities focus area. “Collectively we have delivered, and continue to deliver an excellent range of projects to offer an unprecedented level of interdisciplinary insight into Australian automated and AI mobilities technologies and systems and the benefits, dangers and future possibilities associated with them,” said Mobilities focus area co-lead, Prof Sarah Pink. In addition to traditional academic outputs, the symposium encouraged creative formats for sharing research findings, including poster presentations, ethnographic #documentary films and multimedia contributions. “Let’s suppose we do one day have superintelligent, fully autonomous AI agents. Will we then face the risk they could concentrate power or act against human interests?” In a new article for The Conversation Australia + NZ, ADM+S CI Prof Flora Salim from UNSW explores the potential risks of ‘superintelligent AI’, highlighting various opinions in the field from those who believe superintelligence is imminent, to others who argue it is still far off or unachievable. Those who attended the ADM+S Human Touch in a Digital World film screening at UNSW on 16 October were lucky enough to view the premiere of 'End of the Line', a brilliant #documentary that follows Lala Gutchen, Erub Meuram women from Erub Island, as she navigates the challenges of patchy mobile and internet coverage at the very edge of Australia's 4G network. This Mapping the Digital Gap / Torres Strait Islander Media Association #shortfilm will be available on ADM+S Youtube on Thursday 31 October. 👀
Limited mobile reception on the Torres Strait Islands has a large impact on the movement of fisher- men and women like Lala, who is unable to go to her main fishing spots due to the lack of signal sparking safety concerns. Out soon - the #shortfilm 'End of the Line' will be available on YouTube this Thursday 31 October. 'End of the Line' stars Lala Gutchen, Erub Meuram woman from Erub Island, as she navigates the challenges of patchy mobile and internet coverage at the very edge of Australia's 4G network. The film explores how longstanding cultural practices such as fishing and language maintenance have been irrevocably shaped by modern communications challenges. Lala is a Erub First Language program coordinator and educator, cultural leader, and NAIDOC award winner. End of the Line is a co-production of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society and Torres Strait Islander Media Association (TSIMA).
