Judges for the Indigenous Governance Awards 2024 recently met with Mibbinbah Spirit Healing as part of the awards judging process. Since 2007, Mibbinbah has coordinated a national program of events, including an annual gathering, to provide First Nations people with the necessary opportunity, space, and agency to co-design the support system they need to achieve positive outcomes for their people. Mibbinbah believe that by using their Proper Way methodology, they can create a system of support that is not only long-lasting but also intergenerational, which will aid in empowering First Nations people to heal, grow, and resume their roles as the nurturers, teachers, and leaders in their communities. Winners of #IGA2024 will be announced on Wednesday 6 November at the Indigenous Governance Awards 2024 gala dinner. First Nations women bring essential perspectives to leadership that benefit entire communities. Their roles in governance ensure that decisions are inclusive, culturally grounded, and forward-thinking. When women lead, they uplift everyone—strengthening not just the governance structures, but also the values and futures of our nations. Empowering women in governance is a step toward stronger, more united communities. Girringun Aboriginal Corporation is located at Cardwell, half-way between Townsville and Cairns in north-Queensland. Girringun represents the interests of traditional owners from 9 tribal groups in the region: Bandjin, Djiru, Girramay, Gugu Badhun, Gulnay, Jirrbal, Nywaigi, Warrgamay and Warungnu. Girringun was instrumental in negotiating better land and sea management outcomes. In the process, Girringun lay the foundations for other traditional owner groups looking to do the same. AIGI recognises them as an excellent example of effective governance with a focus on caring for country.
