21 March is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Established by the United Nations, #IDERD, commemorates the 1960 Sharpeville massacre in South Africa, where peaceful protesters advocating against apartheid’s “pass laws” were tragically killed. In Australia, this date also coincides with Harmony Week. While it is important to celebrate our multicultural society, it’s equally important to focus on combating racism wherever and whenever it arises. The Australian Human Rights Commission has developed resources about IDERD to demonstrate how the idea of ‘harmony’ can sometimes obscure structural and systemic racism. These resources are designed to support conversations about keeping the focus of IDERD on ending all forms of racial discrimination and justice: 📌Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gAwq_XGY #Reconciliation #IDERD2025

This year’s Close the Gap report, ‘Agency, Leadership, Reform: Ensuring the survival, dignity and wellbeing of First Nations Peoples’ has been released. This report and the latest release by the Productivity Commission reveals that only four of the 19 targets are on track to be met. This follows the Productivity Commission’s 2024 review of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap which found successive Governments had continued to adopt a ‘we know best’ attitude and a ‘disregard’ for the advice of First Nations communities and organisations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and organisations must lead the design and implementation of the Closing the Gap strategy if the targets are to be met. It is abundantly clear that without decisive First Nations voices in the design and implementation of policies designed to close the gap, efforts will continue to remain unsuccessful. First Nations peoples have the experience and expertise to find solutions. 📌 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/g2V8rjp4 #Reconciliation #ClosetheGap #ClosetheGap2025
