Angel Flight recently embarked on a project with the talented photographer and film maker Sam Thies to showcase the story of our passenger Bella Southern who lives in Monto, QLD. This project gives an in depth look into a special family and highlights the themes of resilience and hope when faced with crisis. Bella's story is one of many that we encounter each day with our Angel Flights. A great deal of our rural and remote friends face many hardships and barriers when accessing specialist medical care, so we do our best to bridge that gap. Our services would not be possible without the dedication of our amazing volunteer pilots and drivers who offer their expertise, aircraft, vehicles and positive attitude towards helping others. Not-For-Profit Spotlight -> Angel Flight Australia Who says networking is dead? Met David Markus, at the FAT FIRE conference last December (shoutout to organiser Wally Chiang). Fast forward to last Friday—I was sitting on his Angel Flight, hearing about how he built and sold his business, and watching firsthand how he’s impacting lives. 🪽 What is Angel Flight? A non-profit connecting: 1️. Pilots like David—who donate their time and aircraft FOR FREE. (Fuel covered by Angel Flight) 2️. Patients in rural areas who need city-based medical care. Last week, it was a kid fighting a brain tumor and his mum. Their 46th trip. 🛩 Flight Path: Essendon (plane pick-up) → Moorabbin (passenger pick-up) → Orbost (drop-off) → Essendon (return). Total time for David? 7+ hours + costs. Total time saved for them? 3.5+ hours per trip. 💡Why This Matters: ✅ 1.5-hour flight vs. 5+ hours by car. ✅ Completely free for patients. ✅ No overnight stays = less stress, fewer costs. ✅ A lifeline for rural families. Now, David’s taking it further—fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia by competing in the Outback Air Race 2025. This year, we proudly introduced Rural Medi-Flights (RMF), a game-changing service designed to bridge the gap between healthcare professionals and rural communities. RMF operates under our Air Operator’s Certificate as an affordable charter option for health teams. It enables doctors and specialists to travel on demand, directly and efficiently, so they can return home conveniently while delivering crucial care. We’ve enjoyed flying health professionals from organisations like the Rural Doctors Foundation and Heart of Australia to towns and communities across Queensland. This year alone, RMF has touched down in: ✈️ CHARLEVILLE ✈️GOONDIWINDI ✈️ THEODORE ✈️BLACKALL ✈️ST GEORGE ✈️MILES ✈️PALM ISLAND ✈️MOURA ✈️WINTON ✈️ROMA ✈️BIRDSVILLE ✈️QUILPIE ✈️EMERALD ✈️SPRINGSURE ✈️HUGHENDEN Through these flights, we’ve helped rural people access vital health services right in their communities, reducing the stress and disruption of long travel distances. At Angel Flight, we are passionate about helping all those in need. From children to the elderly and everyone in between. Pictured is one of our new passengers 1-year-old Cobin, his mum Naomi and sister Nastasia who live in Bairnsdale, VIC and called upon our assistance to travel to Melbourne for a specialist appointment. Our volunteer pilot Rob assisted the family to and from Melbourne by air and Earth Angel Ian provided the ground transport from airport to hospital - allowing them quick, easy and stress free travel all in the same day! Here's some lovely words from pilot Rob about the trip, showcasing why our amazing volunteers love doing what they do for our rural friends: "Today was a truly rewarding experience as I had the pleasure of taking Naomi, Colbin, and Nastasia on their first Angel Flight from Bairnsdale to Moorabbin for essential medical treatment not available in their area. This journey marked the family's inaugural trip with Angel Flight, and we were fortunate to have warm, clear weather that allowed us to enjoy breathtaking views of the Gippsland Lakes, the Latrobe Valley, and the scenic countryside leading up to Moorabbin. Shortly after departure, Colbin fell asleep, completely relaxed by the smooth flight, while Nastasia delighted in the stunning views, capturing moments with her camera. Naomi expressed her surprise at the incredible service provided by Angel Flight, which assists remote individuals in accessing vital medical care in the city. She mentioned that driving to Melbourne would typically take 4-6 hours, especially with stops for the children. In contrast, our Cirrus SR22 plane made the trip in just 50 minutes, cruising comfortably at altitudes between 6,000 and 8,000 feet at a speed of 160 knots (approximately 296 km/h). After their medical appointments, we quickly boarded the plane again at Moorabbin and returned home well before dinner time. I also managed to get back to my airfield at Essendon in time for dinner. I find immense joy in flying whenever possible, and being able to assist families in our rural areas is both satisfying and fulfilling. I look forward to my next mission somewhere in Victoria!"
