Incorporating Clean Energy into Modern Homes 🌱🏡 Marnie Hawson shares her electrification journey, transforming her 1890s cottage into a healthier, more sustainable space. This is more than a personal story—it's a blueprint for architects to rethink residential projects. Key insights include using efficient, clean energy solutions like induction cooking, which reduces indoor air pollution and asthma risks. Marnie worked with Goodbye Gas to streamline the process, offering a hassle-free model for integrating all-electric systems into homes—covering heating, cooling, and hot water. Looking for ways to make your next project more sustainable? Discover how to incorporate renewable energy solutions into your designs for a future-proof, eco-conscious build. Such a powerful post highlighting the concepts of embodied suffering and embodied injustice and revealing the hidden dangers of harmful materials used in the construction industry. Thank you to Dr Fiona Gray for sharing these critical insights and for her ongoing commitment to raising awareness within our community. As a great supporter of ArchiBuild Expo, Fiona helps drive the conversation around ethical sourcing and eliminating harmful materials from our projects. With resources like the Design for Freedom by Grace Farms Toolkit, we can take steps toward greater transparency and creating safer buildings. #EthicalSourcing #EmbodiedInjustice #HarmfulMaterials #ModernSlavery #SocialJustice #SupplyChainTransparency #ConsciousConstruction #SustainableArchitecture

Most sustainably-minded architects and designers are familiar with embodied carbon and embodied water in buildings. However, fewer are aware of the concepts of embodied suffering and embodied injustice, which reveal the hidden human and ecological toll within the building lifecycle. This includes modern slavery in supply chains and health risks from unsafe working conditions and harmful materials. Architects and designers have a responsibility to address not only environmental impacts but also the social injustices embedded in the industry. While concerns often focus on the higher cost of certified, ethically sourced materials, the real issue is the reliance on the so-called 'slavery discount.' Exploitative supply chains may lower prices but this comes at the expense of human dignity, fair wages, and safe working conditions. The true cost is borne by vulnerable workers whose exploitation makes cheaper buildings possible. A 2022 report from the International Labour Organization found that 27.6 million people globally are in forced labour, while 160 million children are subjected to child labour. Disturbingly, the construction industry ranks as the second most problematic sector for modern slavery, just behind domestic services. The complexity and opacity of construction supply chains allow these injustices to persist. With thousands of raw and composite materials involved, ensuring that no forced labour is used can be extremely challenging. However, resources like the Grace Farms Foundation Design for Freedom Toolkit help identify high-risk materials and global hotspots of exploitation, guiding project teams toward more ethical decisions. As architects, we have a crucial role to play in addressing these uncomfortable truths through the products we specify. By making informed, ethical choices, we can help create a more just and sustainable built environment. https://lnkd.in/gugzwKSW #EthicalSourcing #EmbodiedSuffering #EmbodiedInjustice #ModernSlavery #SocialJustice #SupplyChainTransparency #FairTrade #HumanRights #JustBuildings #EthicalConstruction #ConsciousConstruction #SustainableArchitecture
