✨At the beginning of Term 1, Prof. Chris had the privilege to work with amazing educators at Giingana Gumbaynggirr Freedom School in Coffs Harbour, NSW. It was fantastic to receive this thoughtful feedback: 💬"We found the professional learning so beneficial, and it really got us thinking🤔 about what we could do out on Country to bring those learning links back into the classroom." 📸👇Below are educators from Giingana Gumbaynggirr Freedom School in Coffs Harbour, NSW! #education #maths #culture #aboriginaleducation #mathematics #stem #mathematicseducation #stemeducation #indigenous #AboriginalandTorresStraitIslander

ATSIMA 2025 Conference ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS TO PRESENT ARE NOW OPEN https://lnkd.in/gG6zbjjt The theme for ATSIMA 2025 is: palawa kani pumili waranta rrala Our Language Our Strength .... which speaks to the power of language. In the face of attempted genocide, language has been central to Palawa strength, resistance and resilience. The theme honours Grandmother Smith (Fanny Cochrane Smith) who had the wisdom and foresight to record language for her people. Grandmother Smith has taught us that one seemingly simple act, one moment in time, can have an affect that ripples across generations so that Palawa can maintain their identity, their strength and their connection to Country. As mathematics educators, we need to ensure that we value language within the teaching and learning of mathematics. This is an event not to be missed! Well worth a read.
Can instructional mandates deliver better mathematics learning for all students? In this feature article for The Mathematical Association of Victoria’s Common Denominator magazine, Dr Carly Sawatzki and Danielle Armour PhD argue that teaching everyone the same way won’t reduce gaps in achievement. https://lnkd.in/gtSEyyKy Deakin Research, The University of Queensland, ATSIMA - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mathematics Alliance, Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, Deakin University - Arts and Education Research
