About us

The Australia Japan Society of WA is a volunteer organisation formed in 1974 by the late Sir Gordon Freeth (Australian Ambassador to Japan) and Mr John O Brien. For more than 40 years the AJSWA has played an important grass roots role in organising and promoting many activities of interest to the Australian and Japanese communities. AJSWA is run by a Committee of volunteers drawn from all walks of life. All events and activities are due to the generosity of the team who donate their time and talents for the benefit of the community.

  • AJSWA was thrilled to welcome our members and personnel from INPEX Australia to JECCWA yesterday to celebrate and recognise the three-year community investment funding agreement which AJSWA signed with INPEX Ichthys Pty Ltd (INPEX) earlier this year. The INPEX funding is invaluable to support AJSWA’s all-encompassing hub for Japanese language, education and culture – the Japan Education and Cultural Centre of Western Australia (JECCWA). JECCWA is one of only two similar Japanese cultural centres nationally and houses the largest collection of Japan-related language and cultural materials in the State. Securing INPEX as the inaugural foundation supporter is a tremendous boost that will enable AJSWA to expand operations and develop new programs to further benefit the WA community. Yesterday's event was a terrific opportunity for ASJWA members and INPEX personnel, including Vice President, President Directors Office, Takuya Sugawara to come together at JECCWA and to celebrate this wonderful partnership. We would like to thank INPEX for their generous support and to all who came to celebrate the occasion. We’d also like to thank Kyoko and her team from Shikisai Japanese Cooking Classes for the incredible food, Ursula from the Sogetsu Teachers Association of Western Australia for the beautiful ikebana arrangement, Deputy Consul Hasegawa from the Consulate-General of Japan in Perth for joining us and JECCWA Director Melissa Luyke for bringing it all together. Come and visit us soon at JECCWA! John Williams Natalie Garmony Patrick Whight ORS Yuko Tokunaga Yusuke Okamoto

We are delighted to announce the signing of a new community investment funding agreement with the Australia Japan Society of Western Australia (AJSWA) in support of the Japan Education and Cultural Centre WA (JECCWA). Launched at the AJSWA’s 50th anniversary gala dinner on 17 August, the new agreement will reinvigorate the all-encompassing hub for Japanese language, education, and culture over the next three years. “At INPEX, we're committed to supporting the social vibrancy and economic resilience of the communities in which we operate by contributing to their sustainable development,” said INPEX Australia President Director Tetsu Murayama. “As a Japanese company with our Australian headquarters here in Perth, we appreciate the broader roles the AJSWA and JECCWA play in fostering connections between communities, governments and businesses across Western Australia and Japan. “We hope our contribution will help JECCWA continue this role and support even greater engagement and exchange between its many stakeholders,” said Tetsu.

  • Everyone at AJSWA has been overwhelmed by all of the messages of congratulations that we have received since our 50th anniversary celebration over the weekend. We would like to extend our sincere and heartfelt thanks to Tania Lawrence MP for joining us at the event but especially for speaking in the Australian House of Representatives today about our anniversary and also about the announcement of our funding agreement with INPEX Australia to support JECCWA going forward. Thank you Tania! We look forward to hosting you at JECCWA soon!

  • On Saturday night, 150 people gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Australia Japan Society of Western Australia. It was an amazing night paying tribute to our history as well as promoting local entertainment and celebrating our achievements over the last 50 years. One of our proudest achievements is the opening of the Japan Education and Cultural Centre of Western Australia (JECCWA) earlier this year. On the occasion of our 50th anniversary, the Australia-Japan Society of Westralia Australia (AJSWA) was honoured to announce the signing of a three-year community investment funding agreement with INPEX Australia INPEX Ichthys Pty Ltd (INPEX). The INPEX funding is invaluable to support AJSWA’s all-encompassing hub for Japanese language, education and culture – the Japan Education and Cultural Centre of Western Australia (JECCWA). Securing INPEX as the inaugural foundation supporter is a tremendous boost that will enable AJSWA to expand operations and develop new programs to further benefit the WA community. Initially established as part of the WA-Hyogo Sister State relationship, the custom-designed facility, developed in 2020, incorporates a Japanese garden and tatami tearoom, as well as a library, kitchen facilities, classroom and lecture theatre. We look forward to this ongoing partnership and to welcoming you to JECCWA soon! Tania Lawrence
