DFAT Policy learning event – 29 August 2024 The Partnerships Platform's most recent learning event was focused on Australia’s International Development Policy – specifically how implementation of the policy is tracking one year on from its launch. Thank you to our colleagues from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Pacific Development Branch, who led the session and explored how activities supported through the Partnerships Platform can contribute to policy implementation. Partnerships Platform personnel are working with a number of Pacific partners to progress their governance priorities and contributions to a prosperous region. Attendees then explored how monitoring and evaluation systems can capture the effectiveness of relevant activities and their contribution to the International Development Policy objectives. Thank you to all who attended and participated in the session, with a special mention to our DFAT colleagues – David Jacobs, Pete Watson and Mona Balram. The COVID-19 pandemic saw millions of people around the world working from their homes, suddenly finding themselves having to collaborate and communicate connect through screens rather than across a desk. Programs or organisations working across countries and cultures, including in the Pacific, were faced with unique challenges resulting from travel restrictions, quarantine requirements, varying communications infrastructure, and unique organisational and cultural contexts that influence ways-of-working – whether remote or in-person. In this first issue of our Partnership Insights series, we share lessons the Partnerships Platform gathered in relation to remote work, with a focus on a collaboration between Australia and Micronesia-based colleagues that flourished when even they had doubts about what could be achieved through a ‘long distance’ collaboration. It was wonderful to see outgoing Director of the National Economic Planning Office (NEPO), Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MFED), Pranita Carlin, receive such a fond farewell from her colleagues as she prepares to return to Australia this week. Pranita has spent 8 months in Kiribati and is leaving NEPO in good hands, with Tebete England (bottom left), taking on the Director role in an acting capacity. And while goodbyes can be bittersweet, it is a testament to the depth and the strength of the NEPO team that the Director role can be resourced internally. As we wish Pranita all the best, we also extend our congratulations to Tebete as she steps into the position. #PartnershipsPlatform

“In everything that we do there is always a gender equality, disability or social inclusion element. It is how we look at things that allows us to see the opportunities and the significance.” Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Adviser, Shirleen Tomasi Ali, yesterday facilitated a gold medal session for Partnerships Platform personnel and Support Unit members across the Pacific. Shirleen shared some Olympic facts to kick off the session. Did you know: 🤺 Women first competed in the Olympics in 1900 (the first written evidence of the Olympics dates back to 776 BC – a VERY long time ago!)? 🤸🏾♀️ A woman was first elected to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Board in 1990 (90 years after women first competed in the games)? 🏋🏿♀️ In 1996 the IOC set itself a target of having 10% of decision-making positions held by women by 2000 (achieved in 2014) and 20% by 2005 (achieved in 2016)? 🏹 The first paralympic event was in 1948 and involved ex-service men and women? 🤽🏼♀️ The first official Paralympic Games was held in 1960? Interested in more Olympic GEDSI facts? You can find a history of women in the Olympics here: https://lnkd.in/dfr6R8FC And a timeline of the Paralympics here: https://lnkd.in/dyw3SgZ The Partnerships Platform is committed to gender equality and disability and social inclusion. This learning event was an opportunity for personnel to come together to talk through experiences and opportunities for greater equality and inclusion across the cultural and country contexts in which we work. #PartnershipsPlatform
