Part seven of our educational series with Andrew Baildon OLY. Milestones: how do you know that your child will have strong swimming skills for the rest of their life? To begin, all children need to have strong water safety skills ideally before preschool. By the time your child starts year one, they should be able to back float independently, swim and roll into a face-up float, and tread water for over one minute independently. They should also be able to swim so confidently for 25 meters. By the time your child is 10 to be considered a strong swimmer, they should have these skills. A combination of independent treading water and back floating confidently for over a minute and they should be able to swim a strong 200 meter freestyle. If your child can’t hit these milestones at Superfish, we don’t consider them to be strong swimmers. Part six of our educational series with Karen Baildon: Did you know that over half of the kids starting in grade one have very limited drowning prevention skills and basic swimming skills? There is another 25% of children who hold no drowning prevention skills. That's a staggering 75% of our four and five year olds that do not hold lifesaving, self saving, drowning prevention skills. Did you know that for every drowning fatality, there is another 3 to 4 children admitted hospital for need drowning incidents? These numbers terrify me. We know that our under-fives are the most vulnerable in our community for drowning. We have an obligation to make sure that our under-fives are learning self saving drowning prevention skills. TODAY IS WORLD DROWNING PREVENTION DAY! Watch part five of our educational series with Karen Baildon - Keeping Kids Safe Near The Water. What can you do to ensure your children are as safe as possible around any body of water? The first thing supervision is key - you need to have a visual at all times. Young children or beginner swimmers need to be at arm's reach. That also means at bath or shower time. Little ones can drown in an inch of water. Mobile phones are the biggest distraction and are dangerous for parents to be on while they're around any body of water. Make sure your children hold really strong drowning prevention skills. Swimming lessons should be a priority, at the very least until they can float on their back, until they can tread water, and until they can jump in and get back to the side. Don't prop or ever leave open your pool gate. You should be doing a yearly check to make sure your pool fences and pool gates are compliant. Move furniture that could be dragged and climbed over into a pool. Don't leave toys in your pool. We all know that children are very determined when they want something. Don't ever leave anything in your pool that kids may want to get to. Don't mix alcohol and water. Always make sure there is an adult who is sober. Make sure you know CPR. It's a two hour course that we know saves lives. The biggest mistake that you can make is thinking that drowning won't happen to your family. Part four of our educational series with Karen Baildon - How can you FAST TRACK Drowning Prevention Swim Skills? At Superfish, there are four ways that we can help your child fast track their drowning prevention skills. Can you do more than one lesson per week? We know that if you can do two lessons per week, it dramatically improves the rate of development. Can you increase your child's exposure to the water outside lesson times? Backyard pools and the surf or any other bodies of water all increase and assist a child's exposure and the development in the water. Can you do an intensive swim program for a week in addition to your child's weekly lessons? These are normally offered every school holidays and are a fantastic way to fast track development. And finally, don't stop formal lessons. Young children have a limited muscle memory, which impedes them remembering long term. Lessons should be continued until you know your child is holding strong, independent skills. Fast tracking swimming skills can mean that your child will be learning up to four times the rate of them attending one lesson per week. Part three of our educational series with Karen Baildon: How do you gauge your little one’s swimming progress? Part two of our educational series with Andrew Baildon OLY: As a parent, what should you look for from a high-quality swim school for your school-aged swimmer? Firstly, that the swim school is a recognised swim centre without governing bodies and the instructors are fully qualified for all children; a high level of water safety is paramount. Face up, floating. Treading water, falling in the water and paddling back to the side, and grabbing the ledge of the pool. Once these skills are established, the teaching emphasis needs to be on strong swimming skills with a priority on emphasising a strong kick. A focus on a child's head and body position. Instructors correcting technique to make the most effective swimming strokes and easy to follow. Progression of skills that will encompass all four swimming strokes. Lessons over short distances until strong swimming skills are developed and that your child is regularly getting progress checks. Also importantly, make sure that lessons do not have instructors who let bad stroking habits develop with limited correction that your instructor is on pool deck while your child needs assistance in the pool. Having swimmers just swim for long distances with bad technique, and have children put into swim squads too early before all strokes are developed well. Swimming is a skill that will remain with you for the rest of your life, and that's why it's paramount for your children to learn to swim the right way. Have a question?
