    Executive Director at Business Sydney

Sydney business leaders last Thursday had the opportunity to hear from Bastion Reputation research findings on how can businesses navigate and thrive in a new era of uncertainty. Business Sydney in collaboration Bastion Reputation held a reception for 100 business leaders to discuss ‘How can businesses navigate and thrive in a new era of uncertainty?' Scott Thompson Bastion Reputations Chief Strategy Officer presented his thoughts on the new era of uncertainty businesses are facing now and into the future. 2024 will be a year of ballots and bullets. The elections held in more than 70 countries will serve as a stress test for the democratic system, and the impact of the multiple conflicts stoking global instability will shape a world in the throes of a global power shift and a clear regression in terms of humanitarianism and fundamental rights. Sydney Lead Director for Bastion Reputation Tess Salmon conducted a thought provoking panel discussion on the changing public sentiment and posed the question to an expert panel of leaders, who agreed the value of authentic leadership can never be underestimated in dealing with challenges especially when uncertainty now seems more likely. The panel consisted of the following: ⭐️ Shane Fitzsimmons AO AFSM former New South Wales Rural Fire Service Commissioner and Head of Resilience NSW ⭐️ Libby Mudie (Armstrong) former Group GM Media & Corporate Affairs at Crown Resorts ⭐️ Chris O'Keefe Channel Nine Political Journalist & 2GB Drive Radio Host ⭐️ Paul Nicolaou Executive Director of Business Sydney The key take aways from the discussion were the importance of leading with empathy, being prepared for the worst, building resilience, and fostering a culture of transparency and trust with the people who matter most – your stakeholders, investors, partners, customers, community and importantly your employees and where relevant, the media! It was wonderful to see so many engaged guests in the room of esteemed business and government leaders - familiar faces and new connections. Thank you Scott Thompson, Tess Salmon and the team at Bastion Reputation for the collaboration. #sydney #reputation #uncertainty #future #stakeholders #media #researchfindings #community #collaboration #welovesydney

It was our pleasure to host a business networking event in partnership with Business Sydney late last week with a room full of exceptional government and business leaders from across the Harbour City. The evening was framed around the question, are we entering a new era of uncertainty?   Driven by a new report by Bastion Insights an expert panel was assembled to discuss the question and consider how business and government can manage risk and reputation in the current climate. Chaired by our Sydney head Tess Salmon, we were joined by Shane Fitzsimmons AO AFSM, Chris O'Keefe, Libby Mudie (Armstrong) and our host for the event, the exceptional Paul Nicolaou from Business Sydney.    It was an enjoyable evening of conversation, fuelled by Indigiearth’s exquisite native cuisine.   We can’t wait for the next one! A huge shoutout to Pierce and the team at Business Sydney and our team of Sally Taylor Tim Artlett Tiarna Henry for helping make it all happen and to Mr Roses Australia for the beautiful flowers in the room.

Every organisation today is facing the challenge of developing a position on AI. In a context where so much is still unknown, where do you start? Tim Artlett, Associate Principal in Sydney, explores how corporate affairs and strategic communications play directly into this need in the piece below.

A creative, calm and kind strategic and crisis communications specialist

I’ve always used the mantra, ‘control what you can’, but what happens when you are asked to control what you can’t? As AI regulations are developed in Australia, businesses must strengthen their positions and get ahead of Government guidelines. This is my take on that need - through a corporate affairs and strategic communications lens. I was working in a newsroom when the Australian courts ruled that media companies were liable for defamatory comments by third parties on their social pages. However necessary this was, it was jarring to suddenly be wholly responsible for something we had very little control over (in the first instance at least) – someone else posting potentially libellous, inappropriate, or illegal content. Having departed journalism, now working in corporate affairs and strategic comms, I’m looking back at that moment as the tip of a regulatory iceberg. (Hard’a starboard!) In my opinion, any organisations using AI are facing a similarly treacherous journey navigating new responsibilities and expectations – but unlike media outlets in 2021, they have time to prepare for change, protect themselves and strengthen their positions. AI regulation is in the works (Australia is adopting an interim risk-based approach aligned with the EU AI Act which was met with mixed reviews) but ultimately everyone from governments to technologists, to the developers themselves - are still trying to navigate the best way forward. In the meantime – and even after firm regulations are rolled out here in Australia – we will ultimately rely on human users behaving ethically, thinking critically, and recognising implicit bias. One option for companies to safeguard themselves is to clamp down on the use of AI, but rather than trying to rule with a (possibly) counter-productive iron fist that could stifle innovation and creativity, let’s control what we can: 1. Create core principles to inform the ways in which teams will and won’t use this technology. (I believe every single person will benefit from developing their own set of AI principles). 2. Use core principles, along with an informed approach to relevant AI tools, to inform company policies to provide clear guardrails. 3. Craft key messages and communicate them, making sure everyone in the business knows what the policies are, why they exist, and best practice behaviours when working with AI. New technologies are going to keep appearing but if we control what we can with clear principles, policies and messaging to provide guardrails that protect people and reputations, businesses will be better prepared for whatever comes in the form of new digital tools or regulations. If you need a hand with your communications and policy approach to AI, get in touch. #reputation #AI #AIpolicy #EthicalAI #AIprinciples #corporateaffairs #strategiccommunications (AIceberg image created using Dall.E)

Fun segment this week on Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Melbourne's Spin Doctors with Nick Johnston and Ali Moore. Very tough day at the office for the Rex Airlines teams. Find out why they were in my winners list, and why Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart got a mention, naturally. Thanks for the photo Nick!

A big day, a full house, a LOT of content, and a great cohort for our #crisiscomms masterclass yesterday at Bastion HQ in Melbourne. Love seeing the knowing nods, the confidence build, and the penny drop moments as we work through the day. It's heavy going and we tackle the parts of the job that you don't really get told about, and how to identify your skills and learn to manage yourself and others to find calm in the chaos. Thank you IABC Victoria and Tiji Bardall for being such fantastic partners, and to the legends in my team Kaysia Thompson, Peter Trevaskis, Katrina Shute, Jake Levin, and Georgina Patterson for being part of making it a great session. And to the indefatigable Heidi Mitchell for flawless event management. If it wasn't for the IABC global learning team pushing me to not just admire the problem of poor crisis communications professional development, this course wouldn't exist. #professionaldevelopment #corporateaffairs #teaching #continuouslearning #leadership
