Preventing modern slavery by educating, advocating, collaborating and solving this wicked problem together.

About us

We all value our freedom – freedom to choose how we live and work. But not everyone enjoys the same freedom. There are more than 50 million people in slavery around the world and more than 150 million children experiencing child labour. Be Slavery Free is dedicated to ending modern slavery and human trafficking. We understand this wicked problem cannot be solved by any one individual, organisation, government or country. It's a shared responsibility of all global citizens, and can only be solved together. Our mission is to end slavery in all its forms. We believe that businesses have a critical role to play in ending slavery, and we work to empower them to take action. We offer a range of services to businesses, including provision of the best resources and tools to address modern slavery, supply chain risk assessments, training for staff, facilitation of building policies and practices to address modern slavery in supply chains, review of modern slavery statements and more. Be Slavery Free is a coalition of NGO's and like-minded businesses to campaign and advocate for systemic changes that combat modern slavery. Join us and together we can make slavery history.

How many of your Australian-branded products are actually made in Australia? It's easy to be fooled into thinking that your Australian-designed or 'since 19xx' brands are also produced in Australia, however this is often not the case. In recent decades, thanks to rapid globalisation, it became so much cheaper to offshore the production. This is because labour costs and inputs were so much cheaper overseas. Consequently, the monitoring of labour inputs became almost non-existent overnight when offshore production began. While it is the onus of the company to undertake sufficient due diligence into the supply chain, when there’s no penalties for doing the wrong thing or reward for doing the right there’s just no incentive to look further. This means that workers in these supply chains are subject to forced labour conditions that go unchecked, especially in producer countries like China where the State condones forced labour. So when you buy your next Australian product, check whether it is really made in Australia. But be ready… Your journey to finding a made in Australia product will probably be very similar to the experience of this Canadian-based BBQ customer. Frustrating! That’s why we need better laws that help businesses do the right thing.

Exit trafficking is when someone is deceived into leaving a country, believing they will return. Often, measures are taken so that they cannot return, such as cancelling visa sponsorship or taking their passport. Omer, 52, became the first person in Victoria prosecuted for exit trafficking after deceiving his wife into travelling to Sudan and leading her to believe she had a valid visa to return. He cancelled his sponsorship of her visa, preventing her from returning and seeing her Australian-born children. A less well-known form of modern slavery, exit trafficking can occur for many reasons and its identification can be difficult. Read more about this case here.

How can Australian consumers make sustainable choices when many international supply chains are marred with modern slavery and environmental damage? A recent article looking at the Future Made in Australia (FMA) bill posits that onshoring the green production of goods such as solar panels can significantly reduce modern slavery risk. Indeed, Australia has robust labour regulations that reduces the risk for forced labour and modern slavery, and accountability is increased when production supply chains are shortened. As the world transitions to green energy, it is crucial that this transition is a just one, ensuring fair labour practices globally.

Elon Musk claimed he would have a 24-hour livestream of his supplier's cobalt mine to combat child labour, but he has failed to deliver. The reality, however, is not so simple. According to the ILO, "child labour" is work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development. Many children end up working because their families cannot afford childcare or need to supplement the family income when parents don't earn enough. When children are unable to attend school and have to work at such an early age, it causes irremediable damage. Cobalt mining, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is notorious for its child labour issues. The DRC supplies 70% of the world's cobalt, with many children working in hazardous conditions to extract this vital mineral used in batteries for electric vehicles and electronics. While audits at Musk's suppliers found no cases of child labour (following scheduled visits), it doesn't guarantee that children are not there, and the problem persists in many other mines that sell cobalt to traders Tesla supplements its supply from. One way to address this issue is to ensure that there is greater accessibility to schools nearby, and that the children have a means to get to them. When children are in school, they're not working! It requires collaboration from many stakeholders, including government, civil society and industry. While difficult to execute, it is necessary and pressing.

Would you pay to get a job? If so, how much? Imagine paying two years' worth of wages just to secure employment. It may sound unbelievable, but many low-skilled workers often pay up to two or three years of their base wages to get a job. This is the harsh reality for many migrant workers hired to expand Taiwan's airport. They were charged exorbitant upfront fees to secure their positions, forcing them into debt to banks, family, and recruiters, paying thousands of dollars upfront. Additionally, they faced monthly fees to recruiters and costs for services like transport, all on top of the initial fee. This is a form of modern slavery known as debt bondage, where employees are unable to leave a role due to owing money to the employer. They must continue working to pay off the unreasonable levels of debt, often indefinitely. This is because they have spent all of their savings securing the job and have no financial means to leave their exploitative role. Read more about the case of migrant workers in Taiwan here.

We are always looking for solutions to create transparency in a supply chain. The use of blockchain in maintaining transparency has many benefits, including the ability to trace data in every step in a supply chain. This includes noting interactions and price paid, to whom, and for what. It is a promising way to ensure that forced labour is not used in a supply chain, however the technological requirements to collecting this data is not yet accessible for everyone in a supply chain. You can read more here: https://lnkd.in/dFcQ-szu Our partners at BlueNumber (the tech behind MillionMakers) uses similar technology to create a B# that is unique, interoperable digital identity that ensures valuable data is property secured and protected, and that the creator of the data is fairly compensated.
