Backing Australian Businesses to Thrive
About us
Australia’s only purpose-built growth capital fund dedicated to the SME sector, the Australian Business Growth Fund supports Australian businesses to realise their full potential. Today, we are one of the leading investors of growth capital in Australia. We have over $500 million of capital to deploy, with initial investments of $5 million to $15 million in each business, and up to $15 million in follow-on investments. Our unique public-private partnership model, facilitated by a powerful alliance between the Federal Government and six leading banks, bridges a critical gap in the market between venture capital and private equity. Our mission goes beyond financial investment. ABGF brings together capital, capability and connections, while only taking a minority stake in the business - leaving the business in control. We act as a catalyst for growth for Australian SMEs, spanning the entire breadth of Australia – from the east to the west coast, the far north to the south, and everywhere in between. Through minority and 'patient' capital investment of up to ten years, businesses can expand into new domestic and international markets, invest further in R&D, pursue mergers and acquisitions, and plan for succession. ABGF is dedicated to investing in Australian entrepreneurs, disruptors and growth oriented businesses to unlock economic benefits for all Australians.

Last week, our CEO Anthony Healy sat down with Tom Rabe from The Australian Financial Review to discuss the untapped potential of Western Australia (WA). Anthony highlighted how WA’s favourable lifestyle, proximity to Asian markets, and evolving industries – from renewables to med-tech and defence – position it as one of Australia’s most attractive states for growth. “If you’re looking for favourable tailwinds, then WA is a state that’s got more favourable tailwinds than probably the rest of the country put together.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dSSKm3MA #SMEs #GrowthCapital #WA #Australia

Our very own Co-Head of Investments, Ghazaleh Lyari, recently spoke at the 2024 Australian Investment Council Conference, discussing the importance of diversity and championing change in our industry. Ghazaleh emphasised that true diversity goes beyond representation – it’s about creating an environment where every voice has an impact and contributes to driving real change. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the core of our values. We believe that by fostering an inclusive culture, we not only drive better business outcomes but also contribute to a more equitable industry. We are committed to continuing our work in this space and advocating for meaningful change. #Diversity #Inclusion #Leadership #PrivateCapital #InvestmentCouncilAU #Ignite2024
Diverse teams outperform homogenous teams, so why is the move to real diversity happening relatively slowly? In our first session for the afternoon, our panel drilled down on how to continue to turn the dial on gender equity. Glow Capital Partners Co-Founder Kate Morris suggested that rather than looking at diversity as a tick box exercise, it is essential to recognise the tremendous performance opportunity that diversity brings. Kate’s key takeaway: Ask how your culture is supporting the inclusion of people from diverse backgrounds. Think about how you can do things differently to encourage people to give their opinions and to take up space. An organisation’s leadership team is responsible for creating an inclusive culture, Australian Business Growth Fund (ABGF) Growth Fund Co-Head of Investments Ghazaleh Lyari explained. “It’s much easier to attract a diverse team when you have a diverse leadership team.” Ghazaleh’s key takeaway: “Representation at the senior levels is important and if you don’t think it is, it’s because you are well-represented already.” Roc Partners Group Managing Partner Michael Lukin highlighted the importance of male leaders taking a position on diversity. Michael’s key takeaway: "It’s still a male dominated industry. It’s up to us to call this out. Don’t look the other way and fall into the trap of rinse and repeat." Thank you to our moderator StepStone Group Director Eden Lawrence. #Ignite2024 #InvestmentCouncilAU
