Congratulations to Marti Fletcher one of our dedicated Electricians, for winning the 2024 Westfields Local Hero award for her work with the Blacktown Women’s Shed, an initiative of Blacktown Area Community Centres Inc. As part of the award, Westfield has provided Marti a community grant of $20,000 to support her work at Blacktown Women’s Shed, helping to expand its impact in our local community. Marti made history as the first female fully qualified electrician in NSW in 1990, and continues to share her skills and experience as a volunteer at Blacktown Women’s Shed; all while working full-time at Council. Marti would like to thank everyone who voted for her and for their continued support of her work within the community. At Blacktown City Council we are delivering projects that demonstrate that Western Sydney deserves, and can have, excellent buildings and facilities. I am honoured to share that Blacktown Exercise, Sports and Technology Hub (BEST) has been announced as the winner of the prestigious UDIA NSW 2024 President’s Award.   Already a winner of the 2024 UDIA Design Award, the BEST hub, located at Blacktown International Sports Park, is a significant part of our long-term vision for the transformation of Blacktown City’s future.   ‘BEST’ provides state-of-the-art facilities for training, sports medicine, rehabilitation, research and education, also offering accommodation, a large café-restaurant and a physical literacy space for people of all ages and abilities. It serves as a vibrant community hub supporting local and national teams and community groups, while playing a key role in developing the next generation of sporting talent.   Led by Council’s City Architect, Bill Tsakalos, ‘BEST’ was designed by ARM Architecture and constructed by Buildcorp, with Architectus designing the landscape and physical literacy area.   Congratulations and well done to the entire project design and delivery team, and to all those who collaborated to deliver excellence. Thank you to our partners operating the facility: Australian Catholic University, Sydney West Sports Medicine, WentWest - Western Sydney PHN, Delaware North and AFL - Australian Football League.

On Wednesday we celebrated Jersey Day to promote organ donation. It is an opportunity to raise awareness on how to become an organ and tissue donor, and to have that important conversation with our loved ones. Jersey Day was inspired by the gift of life that Nathan Gremmo gave to 6 people when he became an organ donor at the age of 13. Our Council team held a special gathering in the Civic Plaza on Wednesday 28 August in recognition of Jersey Day where all staff donned their favourite jerseys to support this great cause. We are immensely proud of Marti Fletcher, Council’s multi-talented electrician from our Building Construction and Maintenance team, for being nominated as a ‘2024 Westfield Local Hero Finalist’. Despite her busy work schedule, Marti never fails to give up her valuable personal time volunteering at Blacktown Women's Shed. Marti was instrumental in the re-opening of the Women’s Shed last year. The facility is run in partnership with Blacktown Area Community Centres Inc. and Blacktown City Council, and provides a ‘safe space’ for women in our City – a place they can call their ‘own’ where they come together to bond, build, learn and grow. Marti has worked tirelessly to help rebuild the Women’s Shed equipping it with appropriate tools and resources. She loves sharing her wealth of knowledge with women at the Shed, teaching them how to use a variety of tools. Marti also dedicates her time to promoting sustainability and looking after our environment, and is committed to her mission of creating a positive, safe and inclusive space for women in our City to connect and grow. Marti’s work to help support and empower women in our City is commendable. Thank you and well done Marti, we are proud of your passion and commitment.  #westfieldlocalheroes

At Blacktown City Council we are proud to have played a small part in Darshanik Aryal’s journey – from being a passionate and committed Blacktown City Youth Ambassador, to earning a spot at Harvard University to pursue a degree in government and economics. Darshanik served as school captain at James Ruse Agricultural High School before being named our City’s Youth Ambassador for 2022-23. Driven by his passion, Darshanik worked diligently with our Mayor and Councillors to represent the youth in our city. He has been focussed on advocating for youth mental health amongst other projects that he championed during his term. It is great to see our youth ambassadors become agents for positive change for our young residents.  Congratulations and well done to Darshanik for pursuing his passion. We are proud to recognise your achievements that will continue to inspire many young people in our city. For more than 40 years, our Youth Ambassador program has provided our young people the chance to gain invaluable experience representing Blacktown City, and we hope that the insights and experiences you gained at Council as our City’s youth ambassador will continue to reward you. Wishing you all the success in your new journey at Harvard. Pictured with late Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM and CEO Kerry Robinson OAM.
