Our warmest thoughts and acknowledgments to you on International Women’s Day 💫 Engineers Australia Canberra Division together with our friends and valued partners at Consult Australia including Alison Kirk (NSW/ACT State Manager) and ACT Chair Sophie Quinn was proud to host an engaging International Women’s Day event. Emceed by our Division President, Alastair Cossart, the function brought together industry leaders, advocates, and changemakers, including ACT Government Chief Engineer, Gillian Geraghty. Alastair’s message of inclusivity and authenticity set the tone for a powerful and inspiring gathering. We were so incredibly privileged to hear from Jo Farrell General Manager of Kane Constructions Pty Ltd ACT and founder of Build Like A Girl whose words challenged the status quo and inspired us all to push for greater equity, inclusion, and progress in engineering and beyond, emphasising we ALL belong. As part of this special IWD afternoon, we also took a moment to recognise outstanding leadership in our profession. Our General Manager, Angela H. had the honour of presenting Engineers Australia Fellow awards to two inspirational members, Rear Admiral Rachel Durbin CSC FTSE and Matthew Silleto. We were also proud to celebrate our own Division Committee member, Anntonette Dailey CPEng EngExec, who was recognised for her exceptional leadership with her Engineering Executive (EngExec) credential. Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating the remarkable contributions of women in engineering and industry, you made the event so very special. It was great to get out amongst some project sites across Melbourne this week and speak to the workforce of the Metropolitan Roads Program Alliance. Our founder Jo Farrell spoke to the teams about what has (or hasn’t) changed in construction over the past 29 years, how everyone is responsible for changing our site culture and the need to open our hearts and minds to diversity in all of its forms. The teams were curious, attentive and engaged and we left feeling like some great conversations have been started. Happy Wednesday everyone! Today we call out the misogynistic, unsupportive and blatantly juvenile rants of a mediocre man in radio. Whom, we might add, has been rather vocal in recent months about prioritising his own health and wellbeing. However does that level of empathy and care he has for himself, extend to professional female athletes? Of course not. He’s declared open season on the #Matildas for having the audacity (insert indignant male gasp) of losing a football match. Not only does he lay the boot in about the loss, but then decides to degrade and demean not only the team, the sport and supporters, but every single woman or girl out there who has ever considered a professional sporting career. All of this coming from a guy who has never, ever played elite level sport - and let’s be honest, probably sucked at amateur sports too. This kind of stuff is vile, disgusting and unwanted. Triple M Radio - be better. And Marty Sheargold - maybe extend that care and thought of your own mental health towards others and understand everyone feels this type of stuff, not just your fragile, pathetic ego. #misogynyatitsfinest #tripleMradio #martysheargold #bebetter
