  • Regional businesses are impacted by cost of doing business, including the cost of wages, payroll tax and other government charges. Definitely agree there needs to be some reforms to support our regions. #regionalbusiness #nenw #businessnsw #supportingSMEs

Chief Executive Officer at Business NSW

I spoke to the Sydney Morning Herald on the weekend about the urgent challenges facing NSW businesses. Our state is experiencing the highest rate of business insolvencies in Australia. In 2023-24 NSW had 42% of Australia’s insolvencies yet only 31% of the country’s population. There were 4634 insolvencies in total. Our analysis of ASIC data shows that, since the pandemic, we are the only state that has seen average yearly insolvencies increase. This crisis reflects deeper issues in our economic environment, including outdated tax and regulatory policies. According to Business NSW data captured in the past month, 38% of businesses say taxes and government charges are the biggest barriers to business expansion. This should ring alarm bells for both state and federal governments. We need immediate action: The NSW Government must lower payroll taxes, reform the Emergency Services Levy, and introduce a new energy advice program for SMEs. Federally, we need a rethink of recent industrial relations changes and a permanent increase in the instant asset write-off. Let's push for these changes to support our businesses and safeguard our economic future.
