Inland floodwaters can cover vast areas, particularly in low-lying basins and #floodplains, and can persist for weeks or even months. Such floods have widespread #impacts. Australia's semi-arid regions are especially vulnerable because these #floods can transform typically dry landscapes into temporary wetlands, promoting both ecological renewal and challenges. Understanding inland flooding is crucial for improving flood management, predicting flood patterns, and mitigating long-term risks to communities and ecosystems. C&R have extensive experience in predicting the behaviour of soils on the floodplains. When floodwaters evaporate, salts are deposited both within and on the soils of the floodplain. The composition of these salts may have major influences on the behaviour of the floodplain soils on the next inundation. The mulga or king brown #snake (Pseudechis australis) is Australia’s largest #venomous snake, growing up to 3 metres in length. Despite its common name, it belongs to the black snake family (Pseudechis) rather than the true brown snakes (Pseudonaja). Found in all states of Australia (except Victoria and Tasmania), the mulga snake is highly adaptable, inhabiting woodlands, grasslands and scrublands. Although the toxicity of their venom is relatively low by Australian standards, mulgas can deliver large amounts of venom in a single bite. #regionalAustralia #wildlife #CnRexpertise

#Coral reefs on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) represent one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, hosting thousands of marine species, including corals, #fish and invertebrates. Spanning over 2,300 km, the GBR's coral structures provide essential habitat, protect coastlines from erosion, and support fisheries and tourism. C&R have wide-ranging experience in monitoring marine and freshwater ecosystems. A #video of a blue-tongued lizard (Tiliqua species) – or simply bluey – in remote Queensland. Blueys are iconic #reptiles found across Australia, known for their distinctive blue tongues, which they use as a defence mechanism to startle predators. They can also hiss and flatten their body to scare away potential threats. Blueys generally live in open country with a lot of ground cover (e.g. grasses or leaf litter). #CnRconsulting #environmentalMonitoring #lizard #skinks #warning

Water bodies undergo a range of natural cycles that have to be considered when assessing #waterQuality. These cycles include the diurnal variability in #photosynthesis that can cause #oxygen levels that are temporarily outside the guideline range. On longer timescale (seasonal and interannual), the changing water level can result in concentration (dry season) or dilution (wet season) of physicochemical properties like #salinity. C&R have extensive experience in water sampling and quality assessment in a variety of settings. A bird of prey #nest high up on a eucalypt #tree. Birds of prey play crucial roles in Australia's ecosystems. As top predators, they help regulate populations of prey species, contributing to #ecosystemBalance. By controlling populations of rodents, reptiles, and other small animals, they help prevent overgrazing and maintain #biodiversity. Additionally, their presence indicates the health of ecosystems, serving as indicators of environmental quality. Birds of prey also hold cultural significance in indigenous Australian communities, symbolising strength, freedom and spirituality. #CnRconsulting #birdofprey

#Weed and #seed wash-down procedures are critical biosecurity measures implemented at Australian mines – and are routinely applied by C&R during scientific #fieldwork. These practices involve thoroughly cleaning vehicles, equipment and footwear to prevent the spread of invasive plant species and seeds between sites. By reducing the #risk of introducing and spreading non-native flora, these measures help protect local ecosystems, maintain biodiversity, and comply with environmental regulations. This proactive approach is essential for preserving the ecological integrity of mining areas and surrounding environments, ensuring sustainable management and conservation of natural resources. There are approximately 94 species of huntsman #spiders (Sparassidae) in #Australia. They live underneath loose bark on the ground or in trees. In houses, they are commonly hidden away in dark corners (e.g. behind picture frames or air-conditioning units). Although huntsman spiders can appear terrifying because they are hairy and can attain leg spans of up to 15 cm, they are largely harmless and docile, preferring to flee in the face of confrontation. Are you scared of spiders? #CnRconsulting #coexistence #wildlife

A common sight during Australia’s wet season: a seasonally arid stream #flooding a road. In coastal settings that have fast-draining topography, roads may be passable again within a few hours. However, inland flooding is often much more persistent, with some areas #inaccessible for weeks. C&R have extensive experience in assessing flood behaviour and the response of the land surface (#soils). We regularly apply this knowledge to adapt our remote fieldtrips to often rapidly changing conditions. Ranaviruses are a #pathogen of ectothermic vertebrates and have been known to cause population declines in some species. #Freshwater #turtles are susceptible to multiple routes of infection, with Australian environmental conditions (e.g. temperature) commonly within the range known to maximise infection rates. Australian turtles have been previously found with a high prevalence of antiviral antibodies, indicating that natural exposures do occur. However, none have been found with active infections. In this study, the blood of six turtle species were sampled from five locations in northern Australia to detect evidence of #Ranavirus in wild populations. Although none were detected, future research should include hatchling turtles and increased temporal sampling regimes. Given that the listed status of half of freshwater turtle species in Australia is of significant conservation concern, future research is needed to fully understand the prevalence and risks of this emerging pathogen. Jason, C&R’s senior aquatic ecologist, has co-authored this study: https://lnkd.in/gpMfyBYk For more on our research capabilities or #publications, contact us or visit our website: https://lnkd.in/gZM3W-U #scientificResearch #CnRresearch
