Earlier this year, Glencore’s Port Operations in Townsville received an $11 million facelift. Glencore manages and operates the Berth 8 shiploader at the Port of Townsville, along with associated storage and logistics facilities. At the port, Glencore maintains three concentrate storage buildings where both our own and third-party concentrates are received and securely stored for export. Due to the composition of concentrates and the humid conditions in Townsville, Glencore must continuously maintain the integrity of our storage buildings, as construction materials can deteriorate and corrode over time. To address this, the Chemistry team at James Cook University conducted experiments to test alternative materials and surface coatings. After careful consideration, a combination of composite and painted materials was chosen to ensure the longevity of the roofs and walls. Project Manager, Justin Remmer said; “Completing the project in conjunction with everyday operations meant compliance and safety measures were carefully considered daily to ensure the wellbeing of staff and contractors and to minimise disruption to the business. “Managing construction work on the roof and the lack of trafficable access, meant work was carried out via alternative methods including purpose-built crane-lifted work boxes, mobile elevated work platforms and dedicated walkways.”

Make way for Bulga Coal’s 13 new Komatsu Australia 930E Tier 4 haul trucks. The new additions to the fleet took 6 weeks for Komatsu to assemble the equipment before they were trucked to Bulga for the final build. They are the second largest truck in Bulga’s fleet and are quieter, more reliable to maintain and have reduced emissions. Thanks to Komatsu for sharing the journey to Bulga mine and their final assembly onsite.

It's National Skills Week. A chance to spotlight how Vocational Education and Skills Training can be the ultimate game changer in your career and life. Earlier this year, Oaky Creek Coal welcomed six first-year apprentices to its highly sought-after Apprenticeship Program. This year’s intake saw newcomers aged between 17 and 21-years old with their arrival bringing the total number of apprentices at the site to 22. The program is a valuable way for apprentices to gain real-life experience on the job while setting up their career. “They certainly had their eyes opened. There’s a big difference between learning in the classroom and being on the ground at a mining operation,” said Jonathan Harris, site coordinator of the program and Technology Superintendent.

1,558 hectares of rehabilitation was completed across our coal operations last year. To put that into perspective, that’s the equivalent of over 1,970 NRL football fields. At every site, we aim to effectively manage and rehabilitate the land we mine to minimise our disturbance footprint and meet regulatory requirements. This helps to ensure the land is returned to self-sustaining native ecosystems, agricultural use or other approved final landforms. ℹ️ Rehabilitation Booklet: https://glencore.ws/rehab

A day working as a mining engineer is usually filled with major projects and many hours spent on a mine site. But for some at our Mount Isa Mines operation, they also get to visit local schools to deliver books to students as part of our long-term sponsorship of Books in Homes Australia. Just like Nick, Manager Surface Engineering who recently enjoyed spending time at Sunset State School reading to children. Students from seven schools around north west Queensland, as far as Camooweal and Dajarra are part of the $106,000 per year Books in Homes sponsorship. Each student chooses nine books a year to keep and help foster a love of reading. We’re so proud to support childhood literacy. Since we’ve partnered with Books in Homes Australia, we’ve delivered over 200,000 books and invested more than $1.7 million in the program.

Glencore proudly acknowledges 25 years of nickel and cobalt production at Murrin Murrin Operations in Western Australia. Murrin Murrin was officially opened in July 1999 and is Australia’s largest cobalt producer and one of the largest producers of nickel. Then Prime Minister John Howard and WA Premier Richard Court joined the Murrin Murrin team onsite to officially open the operations and unveil a plaque in the plant area which remains to this day. The milestone was celebrated at site with some great food and live music, including a set from Jaylee Ireland, Superintendent Site Services, supported by Murrin GM Adrian Herbert on drums. Murrin Murrin’s success would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of our people and the support of our local communities.
