Cancer Australia is calling for applications for the Partnerships for Cancer Research grant program – a new $9.6 million initiative to support cancer research for and by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Cancer Australia is delivering this grant in partnership with the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). This national grant program aims to involve communities in designing research for their benefit and strengthen partnerships between communities, health services, and research institutions. Partnerships, with funding of up to $2.5 million each, will improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, enhance equitable cancer care, build research skills among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers, and support local leadership in cancer research. Applications for the Partnerships for Cancer Research grant program are currently being accepted until 5pm (AEDT) Wednesday 12 February 2025, via NHMRC's grant management system – Sapphire. Congratulations to the grant recipients for the 2024-2027 Support for Cancer Clinical Trials (SCCT) program, with a total of $22.2 million awarded over the next three years. This funding, administered by Cancer Australia, will support 14 Multi-site Collaborative Cancer Clinical Trials Groups (CTGs) across the country. The SCCT program is globally unique, designed specifically to fund the development of clinical trial protocols and build sector capacity through core infrastructure funding. The program fills a critical research funding gap in Australia by supporting the advancement of cancer prevention, treatment, and care programs that may not attract commercial interest from industry. Cancer Australia in partnership with the Aurora Education Foundation is calling for applications for the First Nations Cancer Scholarship - a ground-breaking new scholarship program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, health professionals and researchers in the field of cancer. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduate students, early career researchers and health professionals can apply through Aurora’s Indigenous Pathways Portal for financial support of up to $120,000 annually for up to 3 years, as well as academic, wellbeing and community support. We’re excited to announce that Professor Dorothy Keefe PSM MD will be one of the keynote speakers at the 2024 Melanoma and Skin Cancer Trials Annual Scientific Meeting on 24 October 2024 in Sydney. Professor Keefe is CEO of Cancer Australia, a position she has held since 2019. She is a qualified and experienced medical oncologist and an honorary Clinical Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Adelaide.
