Statement from the CICA President on the recent announcement regarding the National Careers Institute

📣 Australia risks losing critical ground in workforce reform. The Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) expresses deep disappointment at the decision to discontinue funding for the National Careers Institute (NCI). The NCI has played a pivotal role in shaping innovative, evidence-informed, and inclusive approaches across education, skills development, and employment policy. From supporting school leavers and women returning to work, to refreshing the Australian Blueprint for Career Development, its contributions have been substantial and future-focused. As skills shortages grow and workforce transitions accelerate, now is the time for greater leadership in career development—not less. CICA urges the Australian Government to reinvest in a robust national career development system. Sustained investment in a body like the NCI is essential for building a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready Australia. This morning, we heard from Marina Mendes Tavares, Senior Economist at the International Monetary Fund who shared critical insights on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the global workforce. 🔹 40% of global jobs are exposed to AI, with advanced economies at higher risk. 🔹 AI will disrupt and redefine work, displacing some roles while boosting productivity in others. 🔹 Income inequality may widen, making workforce upskilling essential. 🔹 Australia is well-positioned to adopt AI but must focus on governance, innovation, and workforce readiness. Compared to other countries, our level of preparedness is not where it needs to be. 🔹 AI policy responses should prioritize digital infrastructure, worker protections, and global cooperation.
