Micro Business Woman of the Year (sponsored by Chamberlains Law Firm) Kate Dawson @sissasorella Kate Dawson is a proudly born Canberran. Her family have operated small businesses in Canberra for many decades & she feels connected & supportive of small businesses in Canberra. Kate graduated from RMIT in the early 2000s & on the side was attempting to acquire her pilot’s license flying small aeroplanes. Becoming a pilot wasn’t viable; however, she always had a desire to work with an Airline & with determination & discipline she successfully secured a graduate career program position with Qantas in her late 20’s. Years later she went on to be the Catering Manager Australia-Asia for Qantas. An incredibly rewarding role. When motherhood called & with the birth of her daughter, Kate & her husband moved back to Canberra in 2007. Upon returning to Canberra, they ran a winery restaurant in Murrumbateman for 7 years, during that time being recognised with a Tourism Award, before a stint in event management at the National Gallery & National Library. Opportunity knocked after her event management career came to an end & presented her with the perfect space to create a business of her own. She saw space in the market for a women’s shoe offering in Canberra & so the journey of Sissa Sorella began. @sissasorella is a curated collection of women’s shoes & accessories. Created as a warm & inviting (very pink) bricks & mortar space for women to be able to comfortably visit, browse & try on from their collection, showcasing the best in season. Sissa Sorella wants women to feel relaxed & confident in their space. Their business has evolved to e-commerce & despite it being more difficult to connect online, they do their best to keep it personal. Their client base is women, primarily 35-75 years. Kate’s key role is to curate the collection to offer variety, seasonality, originality & comfort. Congratulations! . . . #cwb #canberrawomeninbusiness #canberrawomeninbusinessawards
