  • We are delighted to share that Baruwei Lookout received two awards at last week’s AILA National Landscape Architecture Awards. It received both the National Award of Excellence for Tourism and the National Regional Achievement Award. Baruwei Lookout was an incredibly rewarding project to be part of. Offering breathtaking views of Nitmiluk Gorge (Katherine Gorge), the lookout takes cues from the surrounding sandstone Country. Its use of organic forms, colours, and materials allows it to blend seamlessly into the landscape, providing shifting perspectives that change throughout the day. The jury commended the lookout, noting that “The design team has used practical and thoughtful planning and detailing to ensure that, while the infrastructure is beautiful, it is the experience of the cultural and environmental setting that takes precedence. The project is an example of how we can overcome the challenges of working in regional contexts to produce high-quality outcomes that benefit place, community and the economy.” A big congratulations to our Darwin Team on this incredible achievement and thank you to everyone involved, including our collaborators GHD Design and Parks and Wildlife NT. • At any time of the year, the view from Govetts Leap is extraordinary. A year after its opening, the upgraded lookout now offers a more restful setting. Govetts Leap Lookout invites visitors to immerse themselves in the expansive views of the magnificent Grose Valley, sometimes described as the ‘Cradle of Conservation’ in Australia. Creating an experience that is both awe-inspiring and calming, the upgraded lookout sought to balance various visitor needs. To achieve this, we focussed on realising the following four key outcomes: - Enhanced Visitor Experience: Lawns and native planting were used to create a natural buffer between the formal car park and the lookout, inviting visitors to stay, linger, and fully appreciate the views. - Accessibility: Ensuring safe and accessible universal access from the car park to the lookout, shelters, toilets, and picnic area. - Local Character: Restored traditional ironstone walls and arches, emblematic of the Blue Mountains landscape. - Memorable Experience: Enhancing the sense of arrival and anticipation from the Heritage Centre to the Lookout, to create a memorable experience. It has been highly rewarding to work with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and the wider consultant team to bring this design from concept to completion. Seeing it become a cherished spot for local residents as well as first-time and distant visitors to the Blue Mountains and Blackheath area has been very gratifying. Only 5 minutes drive from the excellent food and coffee in Blackheath, it’s a fantastic day-trip destination for anyone visiting the Blue Mountains. Ford Civil Contracting were engaged by Landcom to deliver the Lake Thomson project, to build a vibrant community parkland for the residents of Macarthur Heights. The project consisted of new footpaths, a looped boardwalk, sandstone retaining walls, a children’s playground and family friendly picnic areas with BBQs whilst enjoying the lake scenery. During construction, Ford Civil were required to reduce the lake levels to allow for construction of the boardwalks, bridge structure and footpaths along the lake edge. Additionally, new stormwater and hydraulics systems were installed as well as upgrading the existing spillway to meet the new precinct demands. A focal point of the project was the construction of a looped boardwalk and bridge which sits at a prime location to view the entirety of the project. We hope the local community enjoy this family friendly space with a new playground, swing sets, BBQs and tables perfect for families to enjoy picnics and leisure activities.

  • It was wonderful to see the community come together over the weekend for the long-awaited opening of Lake Thomson in Sydney’s southwest. The Lake Thomson precinct provides a relaxing space for the new Macarthur Heights community, with its lake, expansive lawns, inviting picnic spots, BBQ facilities, and play equipment. We’re delighted to see the park finally open, and we look forward to this new space becoming a cherished destination for the community and all who visit. • The harvesting and reuse of stormwater is a critical component in building climate resilience in our cities and in optimising plant growth. Principal Landscape Architect Martin O'Dea has been leading the way in building climate resilience into our designs, with wicking beds playing a key role in this approach. After trialling wicking beds in a new courtyard at Liverpool Hospital, we continue to learn and refine these systems, applying them to our current and future projects. For more details on our work at Liverpool Hospital, check out Martin’s post below.

CLOUSTON associates have been trialling wicking beds as a way to provide climate resilience to our planting in the face of increasing temperatures, longer dry spells and more variability in rainfall.   Wicking beds are important for a cool green city, and are part of the climate positive design adaption toolkit for landscape architects. See pages 74-79 of AILA’s Volume 1 – Climate Positive Design – Action plan for Australian Landscape Architects. https://lnkd.in/gsvWX2_y Wicking beds are a passive irrigation system using gravity to provide a way to store captured rainwater from rooftops in the soil profile where it can be directly accessed by plants. As one of the sustainability measures for the upgrade to Liverpool Hospital in Sydney, we designed and built wicking beds for almost all of the planting and lawn areas to the new multi storey car park forecourt completed in March 2023. It is always challenging when you do something new, so we engaged Sally Boer and her great team from E2Designlab in Brisbane to provide the necessary design expertise.  They helped us navigate the design process, and reassure the client that it would work. E2Design lab had designed and delivered a passively irrigated sports field in Gladstone Queensland and Sally was the author of the Centre for Co-operative Research passive irrigation guidelines to cool our cities. https://lnkd.in/gjhczH_X For the lawn areas we expected heavy traffic so we have a 300mm deep sports field style gap graded soil profile, using couch as the turf. It’s looking a bit browned off from winter in the photos, but we expect that to come back in spring. Below this is a 200mm deep wicking bed with distribution pipes, gravel and wicking sand bed media to provide the right capillary action. To retain the water in the wicking bed we used bentonite clay blankets. To control the exact depth of water in the wicking beds we cut the outlet pipe and then rotated them to the exact invert level required.   Given it was the first time our contractor ADCO constructions had built wicking beds, the installation of the bentonite blanket was a bit of a learning curve. But the distribution pits and gravel beds were more straightforward plumbing, although they required high tolerances as you would in any gravity driven plumbing system. Our tree pits are a bit more experimental with the wicking beds about 800mm down. We are planning to do a long term monitoring programme to review performance, so follow for more updates. There is a lot more detail than can be easily covered in a post so we have attached here a bit for a photo essay of the system. If you have any questions put them in the comments below. #climatepositivedesign #landscapearchitecture #Passiveirrigation CLOUSTON Associates - a division of Beveridge Williams Beveridge Williams Images copyright CLOUSTON Associates / All rights reserved

  • Protecting our waterways, one creek at a time Tony Cox, NT Manager of Landscape at CLOUSTON, was recently awarded with the 2024 'Australian Government Individual Landcarer Award' at the Northern Territory Landcare Awards, recognising his dedication to land care over the past 26 years. Since 1998, Tony has been an active member of the Ludmilla Creek Landcare Group (LCLG). His contributions include tree planting, path maintenance, rubbish removal, weed control, and collaborating with government agencies, landholders, and the community to protect and restore the creek. He has also served as President and Treasurer. Landcare NT praised Tony’s long-term commitment, noting that "Tony uses his love of the natural environment and his professional skills to support the work of LCLG to protect and enhance environmental and recreational values of remnant woodland, monsoon forest and mangrove communities to support clean freshwater entering Darwin Harbour". This award highlights the important role we have as Landscape Architects in protecting our waterways, particularly as urbanisation and climate change continue to impact our landscapes. Waterways are vital for urban cooling, habitat, connection to Country, and overall liveability. For over 30 years, CLOUSTON has been dedicated to the care of local creeks. In 1994, our Darwin team developed the 'Rapid Creek Management Plan', a key document guiding environmental efforts in the Rapid Creek catchment — a significant freshwater system flowing into Darwin Harbour. This was followed by the 'Ludmilla Creek Catchment Management Plan', prepared by Greening Australia in 1998, modelled after the Rapid Creek Plan to ensure consistent care across multiple landowners. Thanks to the efforts of groups like LCLG, these plans continue to restore and protect our vital ecosystems. Over three decades in the NT, Tony has walked the talk in the stewardship on natural landscapes; so it’s great to see this work fully recognised. #LandscapeArchitecture #LandCare #Revegetation

  • At CLOUSTON, we’re fortunate to have our Sydney office just a stone’s throw from Barangaroo Reserve. In the seven years during which we’ve been in Kent Street, it has been rewarding to watch this important harbour landscape mature. Recently, our Principal Landscape Architect, Josh Harold, and Senior Landscape Architect, Adam Robilliard, led our Sydney team on an insightful tour of this remarkable landscape. Both Josh and Adam were part of the design team that delivered Barangaroo Reserve (completed in 2015) while working at Johnson Pilton Walker, prior to joining CLOUSTON. During the tour, they shared valuable insights into the design process and highlighted the incredible team effort and expertise that went into transforming this area into one of Sydney’s most celebrated landscapes. Seeking to mimic Sydney’s classic harbour headlands, this rapidly maturing landscape has benefited from extensive work in developing varied soil types and vegetation communities that replicate Sydney’s diverse waterfront natural landscapes. #LandscapeArchitecture #Barangaroo #BarangarooReserve

Positioned at the gateway to Parramatta’s CBD, One City Square is a new multi-dimensional precinct comprising residential towers, luxury hotel, commercial workplace, dining and retail. Our Place Brand Strategy sought to interpret AJ+C’s architectural vision, based on ‘the meeting of the waters’. The physical meeting of the Parramatta River with Sydney Harbour sits alongside the more abstract concept of the precinct providing the means to centralise ones life.
