We would like to congratulate the Greens for their recent election pledge which includes the building of 40 new supportive housing buildings around Australia, including Common Grounds and Youth Foyers, providing purpose-built supportive and affordable housing to permanently house and support thousands of adults and young people experiencing chronic homelessness. At Common Ground Queensland, we believe that homelessness is a whole of community issue, not a political issue. Governments need to work together to address homelessness. We welcome any commitment for more Supportive Housing like Brisbane Common Ground from any political party, as we know that it will have life changing results for individuals and families and for our communities. #commongroundqueensland #brisbanecommonground #supportivehousing

Ending homelessness, a person at a time, with the communities in which we operate. Common Ground Queensland (CGQ).
About us
CGQ is the first supportive, affordable, and permanent housing project in Queensland. In 2012, CGQ began to provide homes; it has a record of proven success with ten years of experience in serving former rough sleepers and low-income individuals and families. CGQ's mission is to end homelessness one person at a time. Therefore, CGQ provides homes for the vulnerable, such as domestic violence survivors and formerly rough sleepers. In 2021, CGQ provided homes for 316 people, including 59 children, within its three main programs: Brisbane Common Ground, Supportive housing for families, and Asylum-seeking individuals and families. The positive impact of CGQ’s efforts in 2021 is embodied in a high tenancy sustainment rate of 84%. Moreover, some of our tenants significantly recovered from their previous hardships and embarked on a new life path: They obtained employment and reintegrated into the local community by developing social bonds. CGQ success is not exclusively embodied in stats, though, it is expressed in a feeling our tenants have not felt for long periods. This is how they describe it: Female tenant, 31-40 age group - "I am extremely grateful to live in such a secure building, as I was being stalked in the latter part of last year, and I know I am safe here as people are not simply allowed to come and go". Tenants' security is of a higher priority as some of them still suffer from the traumas they experience due to the danger they faced while rough sleeping. The concierge service that comprises a security guard and a support worker at the CGQ building located in South Brisbane is a powerful means to ensure tenants' sense of security. Join us in our journey to end homelessness, one person at a time! National Close the Gap Day (NCTGD) is an annual awareness event that aims to close the health and life expectancy gap between the First Nations and the non-First Nations communities in Australia. At Common Ground Queensland, we provide housing for a higher-than average number of First Nations people through Supportive Housing. We believe that our commitment to Supportive Housing exemplifies our dedication to Closing the Gap and First Nations communities. Although housing is only one piece of the puzzle in Closing the Gap, we believe that raising awareness on issues such as these is extremely important in creating lasting change. #closethegapday2025

Keeping people on the streets costs more than housing them. These costs include costs to the system, where chronically homeless people interact with government agencies such as hospital admissions at a higher rate; as well as costs to the individual, from poorer health outcomes, loneliness and physical danger from violence. Economic research from Deloitte and UQ shows that Brisbane Common Ground’s provision of supportive housing delivers cost savings to the Government – saving $17,500 per tenant housed during their first year of tenancy. Supportive housing helps sustain tenancies for longer, reducing the risk of re-entry into homelessness. As a result, for a representative cohort of previously chronically homeless tenants, Brisbane Common Ground's provision of supportive housing generates $455,800 in cost savings to government over a ten year period, compared to social housing. It also shows that there are benefits to the individual when provided with supportive housing – saving $203,700 per tenant over their lifetime, consisting of the health benefits due to reduced substance use, safety benefits from avoided cost of injury, and social cohesion benefits from reduced loneliness. We need to stop the cycle of homelessness. There are better ways and solutions to what is currently taking place. We have the evidence; we know that the permanent supportive housing model works. Homelessness can no longer be ignored while we wait for Housing Plans to be realised. Rates of homelessness are on the rise, while a significant number of families and individuals are stuck in temporary accommodation like motels. Meanwhile, we’re seeing more tents in parks and more people living in their cars. We need to urgently come together for a South-East Qld Crisis Summit on Homelessness, focusing on real solutions appropriate to the needs of individuals, families, youth, and communities. The Premier says every Queenslander matters. It’s time to show that this includes the 1,200+ children, young people, families, and single adults cycling in and out of motels, as the Brisbane Zero data shows. Back in early 2022, the foyer of Brisbane Common Ground was flooded. We are grateful that this was not the case over the past weekend! With the recent weather events, we’d like to remind our community that safety is paramount, regardless if the worst of the wet weather has passed. We are grateful to state and local governments for mobilising so quickly and supporting the local communities here in South East Queensland. We’d like to thank our Brisbane Common Ground and Supportive Housing 4 Families communities for pulling together and looking after each other during these testing times. Finally, a big thanks to Micah Projects and CGQ Staff who stayed on-site 24 hours throughout the weather event to ensure the safety and physical and mental wellbeing of the tenants here at Brisbane Common Ground. #CommonGroundQueensland #CycloneAlfred #BrisbaneCommonGround

Living in a home with people supporting you along the way is a completely normal experience. Unfortunately, for many people who experience long periods of homelessness, this is not their normal. That’s why Supportive Housing combines stable, permanent, affordable housing alongside optional, tailored support to help those who have experienced chronic homelessness in rebuilding their lives. Thanks to the team at Deloitte and Prof. Cameron Parsell from UQ for working with us on developing this case for change. Interested in reading the Case for Change Paper? Chronic homelessness is a system failure that results in a continued instability and reduced capacity to interact with our society and economy. The Supportive Housing solution, like the one here at Brisbane Common Ground, uses a Housing First approach to provide safe, affordable housing, with minimum exclusion criteria, as long as needed, to offer stability for individuals to rebuild their lives. Supportive Housing ends homelessness permanently, and can transform lives. Thanks to the team at Deloitte and Prof. Cameron Parsell from UQ for working with us on developing this case for change. We’d like to thank everyone who joined our Case for Change: Supportive Housing event last week. In our overflowing Gambaro room, the team from Deloitte with Prof. Cameron Parsell from UQ, delivered the case for what we hope to be a change in the way we see Supportive Housing. We hope that this event proves - with evidence - the enormous value of Supportive Housing to the individual, the local community, the taxpayer and the Government. There's never been a greater need for innovative, effective solutions to enable people to sustain stable and safe permanent housing and break the cycle of chronic homelessness. With appropriate, affordable housing combined with wrap-around support services to address and prevent complex challenges, Supportive Housing is one such solution. After 4 years of gaining tenancy, tenants in supportive housing are 25% more likely to sustain tenancy than in social housing. The economic benefits are now also evident, with a new report from Deloitte commissioned by Common Ground Queensland (CGQ) finding it costs more to keep someone homeless than it does to house them as a supportive housing tenant. 🔹Brisbane Common Ground’s (BCG) provision of supportive housing delivers cost savings to the Government of $17,500 per tenant housed in the first year of tenancy. 🔹Improvements to a BCG tenant's health, safety, and social cohesion generate $203,700 in economic and social benefits per tenant over their lifetime. While the financial advantages are positive, we know the real benefits go far beyond the dollar figures. For someone caught in the cycle of insecure housing and homelessness, the value of dignity and quality of life in having somewhere safe, stable and affordable to call home is immeasurable. With the evidence hard to argue with, it is time models such as supportive housing become the norm in our communities, not the exception. 👉Read more: ▪️Q Shelter Acting CEO Jackson Hills has written for today's Gold Coast Bulletin on Supportive Housing: https://bit.ly/4hDMnC9 ▪️Deloitte Common Ground Queensland report "Brisbane Common Ground - a Case for Change" Paper: https://bit.ly/4hzYDDM #SupportiveHousing #HomeMatters #BetterTogether #homelessness #housing
