Cook Colliery: Driving Blackwater's mining Legacy

About us

Cook Colliery is located approximately 27 kilometres south of Blackwater in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. Cook Colliery was added to QCoal’s portfolio following its acquisition from Bounty Mining in 2020. The underground metallurgical mine had been in care and maintenance since December 2019 until its return to operational status in February 2022. The mine site has a long history through both longwall but more predominantly bord pillar mining methods since the 1970’s. Cook Colliery will reconvene its transitioning to place change mining method started prior to QCoal’s acquisition. Cook Colliery produces an attractive coking coal product, with high Fluidity, medium volatile and low sulphur content together with a high-quality thermal coal by-product. The Cook Colliery CHPP consists of ancillary surface conveyors and ROM coal stockpile, private haul road for ROM coal, coal preparation plant, product stockpiles, train loader and reject disposal sites. The modules produce two products, a primary hard coking product and a thermal product. The coal produced by Cook Colliery is railed to Gladstone Port for export.

  • Finding Balance – The Power of Workplace Flexibility   At Cook Colliery, flexible working rosters for deputies allow our team to remain active within the industry whilst being able to enjoy more personal time.   Mark Doohan, one of our experienced deputies, recently returned to the industry on a flexible part-time roster. This roster allows him to fill in where needed on site, while also being able to make the most of his time off.   This flexibility is not only great for Mark - but it also benefits the whole team! His deep experience and insights help contribute to the team’s ongoing success while he is on-site.   Thank you to Mark for sharing his experience and showing how flexible rosters can create a better work-life balance, support career longevity, and keep skilled workers in the industry!   #CookColliery #MiningCareers #WorkLifeBalance #FlexibleRosters

This week, we had the pleasure of hosting QCoal Group onsite at Cook Colliery, along with their vacation student, Jose Pena Araya, the inaugural recipient of the QCoal Foundation Christopher Wallin Prize for Excellence in Geology. During the visit, Jose, a Bachelor of Geology student at James Cook University, had the opportunity to explore the complexities of underground mining. He joined Brian Burton, QCoal Senior Geologist, on visits to the 205 Mains Panel and the newly established 302 Panel within the Argo Seam. Brian also introduced Jose to the Blackdown Tablelands, sharing insights into the region’s general geological features. In the photo below: Brian Burton – QCoal Senior Geologist Scott Burchmore – Cook Colliery Geotechnical Engineer Jose Pena Araya – QCoal Vacation Student Brian Jackson – Cook Colliery Shift Execution Lead Jose is passionate about exploration geology and was recognised for his academic excellence with this prestigious prize. Congratulations to Jose on this incredible achievement, and thank you to QCoal for their ongoing support of emerging talent and innovation in Queensland’s mining industry. • It's great to see family values reflected in our workforce. Jamie Paoletti, one of our skilled fitters, is proudly working alongside his son, Jacob, an inexperienced operator eager to learn the ropes of the mining industry.   The guys exemplify the unique opportunities mining at Cook Colliery can offer - where experience meets enthusiasm, and years of knowledge are passed down from one generation to the next.   #CookColliery #FamilyInMining #Mentorship #Teamwork #MiningLife

  • It’s great to see Joseph Hunt, Josh Kinman, Thomas Hunt, and Will McEwan working together at Cook Colliery. The four were schoolmates at Brisbane’s St Joseph's Nudgee College and have crossed paths again underground at Cook Colliery. With roles ranging from graduate engineer and NTI operator to electrician and outbye coordinator, this highlights the valuable connections and opportunities Core Crew provides through our graduate roles and New to Industry program. Tom says, "Cook has been a great place for me to start my mining career. The supervisors are very supportive and want to see me succeed. The team is great to work with and always more than happy to share their years of mining knowledge with me." We're excited to see what the guys achieve! • 2024 Year in Review and Looking Ahead to 2025   As 2024 draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on a year of progress, and achievements here at Cook Colliery. This year, we’ve demonstrated resilience and determination in navigating the complexities of our operations, and together, we’ve reached significant milestones worth celebrating.   Production Highlights - A steady improvement in operational efficiency, with a new record set for production in a reporting week in November, demonstrating the strength of our planning and execution. - Successful commissioning of new systems and equipment, including a second continuous miner, commencing second workings in November and mining through the faulted ground in 301 panel in September.   Safety and Systems - A renewed focus on safety led to a reduction in incident rates and further enhancements to our safety systems. - The introduction and implementation of INX software, improving our ability to manage safety data and ensure compliance.   Team and Training - Continued investment in our people through comprehensive training programs, such as our New To Industry: Inexperienced Worker program, helping new employees build skills and take on new challenges. - Fostering a culture of collaboration and communication, is empowering teams to work together and achieve shared goals.   Community Engagement - Strengthened relationships with the local community, highlighted by our support of QCoal’s partnership with the Bluff Rabbitohs and our collaboration with Blackwater PCYC.   As we step into 2025, we are committed to building on this year’s foundation by focusing on key priorities:   1. Enhanced Operational Excellence 2. Innovation and Technology 3. Community Engagement 4. Team Development 5.
